So, you have all the wearables you could want and just realized your dog doesn’t? Well, no need to feel bad about it. You could always source for some high-tech, highly-priced pieces on the market, or you could skip the costs and make your spoiled pup’s wearable even more special by DIYing it. We’ve collected ten incredible wearables to make for your dog, for ideas to get you started.

1. Live Streaming Dog Camera

Got a pup who is a free spirit, and you let them roam freely and alone at least once a day? This live-streaming dog camera is among the most functional wearables you can ever make for them. It’s Raspberry Pi-powered to live-stream your dog’s movements, and it runs on solar, so it’s sustainable.

It’s weatherproofed, too, meaning come rain or shine, the live stream will always be clear. Worried someone else might try to watch your stream? You can secure it using the MJPG set-up as explained in the Instructables guide. Also check out our guide to identify which Raspberry Pi model is best for your next project.

2. Galaxy Dog Jacket

Every pup looks great, cute, and full of personality in a dog jacket. Making this incredible galaxy dog jacket will do that and more. It’s wired with an Adafruit Feather and NeoPixel ring lights that glow in the dark. So, besides keeping your furry friend warm, it’ll keep you from stepping on them when you sleepily get up to get a glass of water in the middle of the night. Plus, it’s washable! Check out the Instructables tutorial to build this jacket. Here are some more DIY projects every pet owner would love to try.

3. IoT Dog Collar

This IoT collar is yet another perfect wearable for a dog who loves to wander and explore. It has five sensors, a buzzer, and LED strips. The result? It can light Fido’s way after dark or if you go on runs with them before daybreak. But that’s not all…

The IoT Dog collar lets you remotely track your pup’s location, stay on top of his temperature, and even keep track of his activities at home when you’re away. And it costs a lot less than a commercial wearable that doesn’t even boast all these awesome features. Check out the Instructables guide for instructions on how to complete this project.

4. Smart Dog Collar

Obedience training is one of the most rewarding things you can ever offer yourself and your dog. Basic commands like sit, stand, no, and stop can help you address behavior problems in dogs and allow you to get along with them better. Plus, it’s good for their safety too. But obedience-training a pooch isn’t always easy, particularly if they’re easily stimulated (which most dogs are).

Making this smart dog collar will make the endeavor easier. Powered by an Arduino, it features a reward marker to correctly and gently nudge your pup into obeying your commands. This Hackster.io guide does a good job of breaking down the steps to completing this project successfully.

5. PCB Necklace for Dogs

If you’ve already got a tracker and a training collar for Fido, why don’t you make them a necklace? And just like your awesome furry friend, it doesn’t have to be average. Take it to another level by incorporating PCB and some multicolored LEDs into the design. During the day, it looks cool, and at night, it glows. If you don’t have a pup but know someone who owns and loves one, this necklace would make a thoughtful gift of DIY electronics. Check out the Instructables guide for a list of supplies.

6. LED Distance Indicator Dog Harness

If you like letting Fido lose when you’re out on walks, but they are naturally overstimulated and will run further than they should or wander, try making this dog harness as shown in the Instructables project. It has LEDs that glow red (but you can use any color you fancy), making it easier to spot Fido amidst other dogs. It is paired with a continuously talking transmitter to help you keep track of your pup’s distance. Here are some more stunning LED DIY projects you can build.

7. GoPro Dog Harness

Already got a GoPro for the pup? That’s one spoilt pooch. And it’s okay to spoil your furry best friend. After all, it’s not like you expect anything from them when they grow. That said, you will need to securely mount that GoPro on your pup to ensure you get proper footage. And if at all you want them to come back with it after the adventure, a harness is the best solution.

You could buy one, but GoPros are already expensive enough, so build a harness using the easy-to-follow Instructables guide. Besides, seeing your pooch wear something you made yourself will be fulfilling.

8. Dog Health Tracking Device

Wearable tech has come a pretty long way. We now have dog wearables that, in addition to tracking location, can also monitor your dog’s vitals, enabling you to keep up with their health. These wearables can help you alleviate common canine problems like feeding and obesity.

But while the features are appealing, they’re still a relatively new trend, making the price tag not-so- appealing. You can bypass the high costs of buying a health monitor by building one. And if you’ve never attempted anything of this scale before, here’s an Instructables guide for a DIY dog health-tracking device based around a Raspberry Pi, to make the process easy.

9. USB Rechargeable Harness LED Mod

If you regularly walk your dog at night and want to make this fun task even easier for them, this rechargeable harness is a good DIY project to spend your time on. It has a ten-LED strip that runs on a rechargeable USB power supply, meaning you won’t be buying batteries any time soon. The components are securely sewn beneath the harness so it lights up without affecting your pup. It’s an excellent accessory, especially if Fido is in his old age and having vision problems. Check out how to build it in the Instructables guide.

10. EL Wire Light-Up Dog Harness

For another take on a light-up dog harness, give this EL (electroluminescent) wire harness a shot. It runs on a Li-ion battery and has a SparkFun EL wire set to an EL sequencer to automatically light up the LEDs whenever it is dark. You don’t even have to do a thing. The DIY process is slightly technical, but the Instructables guide lists all the supplies and links to some pretty useful resources, so you should have an easy time building one. Once you ace it, it can be your prototype for other light-up wearables such as vests or even a backpack.

Build Your Pup a Wearable

You can never spoil a dog too much. So, if it has been a while since you got them anything, do the right thing today, and build them any of the wearables covered in this guide. While you’re at it, you could also 3D print some useful accessories for your pet.
