If you own a Huawei smartwatch, one of the things you've probably wished for was support for third-party apps. While the company's watches have plenty of functionality, adding support for the many third-party wearable apps would make them so much better.

Thankfully, Huawei just announced during MWC Shanghai that it is bringing third-party app support to its smartwatches soon, which means owners will be able to add all sorts of additional features to their devices.

What Happens When Huawei Smartwatches Get Third-Party Support?

Huawei's wearables are powered by LiteOS, and it's an excellent OS that makes for fantastic smartwatches, minus the lack of support for third-party apps. Today, the company announced that it is fixing that problem by opening the LiteOS division to third-party developers and, through that, third-party apps.

Huawei started by adding Fitify to the Watch GT 2 Pro. It's not clear what apps will follow and exactly which model of Huawei wearables will get support for third-party apps, but launching Fitify is definitely a great first step.

How Will Developers Make Apps?

Huawei plans to offer developer integration kits to those looking to make apps for its LiteOS platform.

It definitely makes sense for developers to hop on board, as research from Counterpoint says that Watch GT 2 was the third best-selling smartwatch in the first half of 2020, only losing to the Apple Watch and Garmin. That's a lot of potential users for third-party developers to grab.
