HUAWEI Nova 10 Pro

When it comes to Huawei, we've become used to all the cool devices over the years, but we weren't really ready for the Nova 10 Pro. It's sleek, it's fast, and you're going to want one! This is a smartphone that may be a mid-ranger, but it's going to feel like a much pricier unit.

Launched this summer, the Huawei Nova 10 Pro can be purchased for €699. If you have the budget for a good handset, then you should definitely consider the Huawei Nova 10 Pro, particularly if you're into taking photos and videos with your phone.

After using this device for a few weeks, let's see what we learned.

Unpacking the Huawei Nova 10 Pro

Huawei Nova 10 Pro box

We know what you're thinking—what could possibly be in this box that we haven't seen before? Well, not much, really, unless you take the extra caution Huawei has for its devices. So, here's what the box contains:

  • Huawei Nova 10 Pro
  • USB Type-C Supercharger and cable
  • Sim tray key
  • Device literature
  • Transparent protective case

The phone comes with a case in the box, so you don't have to worry about that. The device also has a protective screen applied already, so that's another worry off your shoulders.

Frankly, I get so stressed every time I get new phones. I am entirely too prone to dropping them or having them fly out of my hands because my child whips a sword around, the cat has the zoomies and parkours off of me, or the puppy barrels through the house chasing the cat. Knowing the Nova 10 Pro comes with a case and a screen film set my mind at ease.

Stunning Looks

Let's get this out there from the start: this is an absolutely gorgeous phone. This may be a mid-range phone, but it looks like a million bucks. The phone comes in two options - Starry Black or Starry Silver. I received the latter, and it looks fantastic.

This phone departs from the typical glossy finish and opts for brushed metal. This doesn't just look great, but it also makes the device safer to hold and less prone to slipping out of your hand or off the arm of the couch.

Huawei Nova 10 Pro back

The top of the Nova 10 Pro features a microphone and one of the speakers, while the other speaker can be found at the bottom of the phone, next to the USB-C port, the dual-SIM tray, and another microphone. This means you'll have great stereo separation when you're watching media in landscape view.

The left side of the phone is left bare, while the right one is where you'll find the usual volume and power keys.

This is a 6.78" phone that's about 6.74 ounces, with a footprint of 6.46 x 2.93 x 0.31 inches. Since I have small hands, as you'd expect from someone that barely hits 5-feet in height, one of my worries is always about how I'll be able to hold a phone properly and if my fingers can reach the essential buttons.

Thankfully, they're all suitably within reach, as the buttons were not placed really high up the right side, as we've seen with many smartphones in the past. Even using this phone with one hand, it's all fairly easy to operate.

Huawei Nova 10 Pro camera

The front of the phone features a stunning curved screen. There's also the selfie camera, which is placed in the top left corner. Given its position, you'll have to slightly tilt the phone so you center yourself properly. The thumb sensor can be found embedded at the bottom of the screen, but there's no physical indication of its position; the phone will, however, let you know where to place your thumb when needed with an icon.

Flipping the handset over, you'll find the camera. Well, the camera island, truly, as the whole thing protrudes quite a bit off the back of the phone. However, even this design choice makes the phone look glamorous, as the cameras are surrounded by a golden frame.

Huawei Nova 10 Pro Specs

Huawei's Nova 10 Pro runs on HarmonyOS 2.0, which is Huawei's own operating system, though it looks and feels much like Android. Not only does it allow you to use your phone as you'd expect, but you can also seamlessly hook up your IoT ecosystem. On the downside, you don't have access to any of the Google services, so you can't use the Google Play store, for instance. Instead, you're offered Huawei's own app gallery.

The phone has a Snapdragon 778G 4G processor running the show, which is quite good even if it's not the latest one on the market. It's perfect for a mid-ranged phone and will allow you to run tons of apps at the same time, play games, and enjoy the phone for day-to-day activities.

The octa-core CPU is made of four Cortex-A78 clocked at 2.4 GHz and four Cortex-A55 clocked at 1.8 GHz, while the GPU used for this phone is the Adreno 642L.

Both versions of this phone come with 8GB RAM, but you can pick between the 128GB and the 256 GB storage options. I have the latter to play with. Also, there's no card slot with this phone, so that's all the storage you'll get.

The screen is a 6.78-inch OLED featuring HDR10 and a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. The display's resolution sits at 1200 x 2652 and you can enjoy over a billion colors in stunning clarity.

The Huawei Nova 10 Pro features a stunning camera system, too. There's a 50MP Ultra Vision main camera, an 8MP ultrawide, and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front of the phone, you'll also find a 60MP ultrawide-angle and 8MP portrait cameras for great results in video calls and selfies.

The phone comes with a 4500 mAh Huawei SuperCharge battery which supports 100W fast charging. This is a relatively large battery that can last for around two days of regular use.

Huawei claims you can charge your phone to 50% in about ten minutes. From what we've seen, that's about right, as the phone really does charge super fast. We've seen a full charge in half-hour, which is impressive no matter how you put it. There's even a Turbo mode you can activate by tapping and holding the charging bubble once you've plugged it in.

Using the Huawei Nova 10 Pro

Huawei Nova 10 Pro game

Now that those stats are out of the way, let's discuss how using this phone feels for daily tasks, playing games, or streaming your favorite content. Basically, everything you'd do on your phone on any given day.

What I can say is that this one performed wonderfully. It was a joy to carry it with me. One of the things that annoy me with some phones is that the thumb sensor doesn't work that well once you slap a screen protector on it. Well, that wasn't something I had to worry about with the Nova. I didn't have to input my password once because biometrics failed, and that's absolutely great.

Then, I have to say I didn't encounter any issues like lagging or random freezing, which I've had happen with other phones. Switching from app to app was always easy, tools were quick to load, and the shortcut gestures were awesome to apply. For instance, you can just swipe from the edges towards the center of the screen to return to the previous screen or app, swipe up to get to the main screen, and so on.

Streaming content, whether we're talking about Netflix or regular music videos, is a fantastic experience given the quality of screen. HDR10 ensures you'll get great colors, the right brightness levels, and so on. Since we're on this topic, you should know that the screen also shows great and clear images even in broad daylight, which is something that we don't see with many phones.

I've played a bunch of games on this and haven't seen any hiccups, even on more demanding scenes. Even though this isn't a "gaming smartphone," it provides a decent experience.

Nova 10 Pro Benchmarks

If you want to check out how the Nova 10 Pro benchmarks, we took care of that for you.

I used PCMark for Android and got these results:

  • Work 3.9 performance score: 10914
  • Storage 2.0 score: 24710

Then, on the 3DMark for Android benchmark I got the following results:

  • Wild Life score: 2484
  • Sling Shot score: 6297

These aren't the best results out there, but they're impressive nonetheless. It's what you can expect from a mid-range smartphone. On the other hand, as always, it's more important how the phone works in practice than what benchmark scores they get, and we kind of loved testing this one.

Vlog If You Want

One of the coolest features of this phone is the camera system. Not only does the imaging system allow you to take stunning photos, there are also some smart features in there.

Keeping up with the times, the phone comes with a Vlog feature when you open up the camera. There are multiple options to choose from and you can just use the front or rear cameras, or split them up. You can record multiple videos at once, using various zoom settings, split the screen in two, or use picture-in-picture mode.

As you can see, they capture great pictures no matter what your subject matter is or whether you do it in daylight or nighttime. The pictures are crisp and clear and have fabulous colors and details.

Low-light photos are also quite stunning as well, especially as Huawei's system works to balance out the light levels, colors, and so on.

Filming with this phone is also super easy to do. If you want to record a new TikTok, YouTube reaction video, or just your friends doing stupid things, the Nova 10 Pro will work wonderfully. You can even apply beauty filters on the video and watch the phone work its magic. You can shoot at a maximum 4K/30fps, or drop down to 1080p/60fps. There's even a slow-motion 720p/240fps.

Should You Get the Huawei Nova 10 Pro?

Is this a phone we recommend you'd get? Absolutely. It looks stunning, runs fast, takes great pictures, and features an impressive screen you'll simply fall in love with. At this price point, there's really no reason why you shouldn't get the Nova 10 Pro.
