Spotify has millions of songs, albums, podcasts, and playlists for you to enjoy. With such a wealth of content, it can sometimes be hard to find exactly what you're looking for.

If you need help searching on Spotify, you should make use of Spotify's advanced search parameters. These let you search by lyric, genre, year of release, and more. Here's what you need to know.

How to Search by Lyrics on Spotify

Can't remember the name of a song, but can remember some of the lyrics? No worries. All you need to do is search for at least three words from the lyrics.

On desktop, the song will just appear as part of the normal search results with no indication that it matched the lyrics. However, on mobile the result will have a Lyrics match label.

How to Search With Advanced Parameters on Spotify

If you know exactly what you're looking for, use quotation marks to search exactly for that phrase. For example, "dancing queen" will only return results with those two words together, rather than also including "dancing" and "queen" results.

On the Spotify web player and desktop app, you can also use parameters to narrow the search further. With examples, these are:

  • For the year the song released, input year:1990 (this can also be a range, such as year:1990-1995)
  • For the genre of the song, input genre:pop
  • For the record label that released the song, input label:universal

In conjunction with normal search terms or the parameters, you can use AND and NOT to make the results even more specific.

For example, searching year:2000 AND genre:rock will show you all rock songs released in 2000. Similarly, searching taylor swift NOT cats will show you all Taylor Swift songs without the word "cats".
