While there are many ways to make music, Google’s Bouncing Band experimental web app lets you create crazy beats by dropping virtual objects in augmented reality. Just point your phone camera at the floor or items of furniture, and launch anything from hot dogs to rubber ducks to make some noise.

Launch the App

Rather than downloading a standalone app from the Play Store, all you need to do is open the Chrome browser on your Android phone and enter the following URL: bouncing.band. Most modern Android devices should be compatible.

When you load up the site you’ll be presented with the Bouncing Band title screen. Press Start AR! to launch the web app. If you're asked for permission for Chrome to access your phone’s camera, select Allow.

You're now ready to start using the augmented reality app.

Drop Some Beats

The Bouncing Band app will ask you to move your phone’s camera around to scan the floor and surfaces. Do so and after a few seconds you should see a hand icon and circular target.

Tap the screen and you’ll drop the currently selected item on to the target—it could be on the floor, furniture, or any object. Each time it bounces, it will make a noise.

Press the left or right arrow to cycle through the available items: coffee pot, ping-pong bat and ball, broccoli, rubber duck, hammer, hot dog, or laser gun. Each one makes a different sound when it bounces.

With careful timing, you can build up a rhythmic percussion track, although it's not easy. Alternatively, just drop a ton of items for complete chaos. To clear the screen and start again, press the bomb icon at the top right.

How To Use Google’s Bouncing Band App

You can now use the Bouncing Band web app to drop augmented reality items to create rhythms and have fun. Bouncing Band is one of Google’s experimental apps using WebXR, which brings together AR and VR on the web to make them more convenient and widely accessible.
