In June 2021, Instagram confirmed that it was testing a new feature that allows users to upload and post videos directly from their computer—without needing to rely on a workaround.

The feature brings the desktop browser version closer to the functionality of the mobile app.

If you're one of the users included in the test, this article will show you how to use the new feature to upload posts to Instagram from your PC—as well as the benefits of the tool.

What to Know About the Instagram PC Upload Test

As of August 2021, Instagram was still testing the feature, rolling it out to certain users on the platform.

The company didn't share the criteria for which accounts are included and which aren't. For example, we compared two business accounts with similar follower numbers, based in the same country—but one had access to the new upload feature and one didn't.

You can find out if you're part of the test by logging into your account on Instagram through your desktop web browser.

If you see the new plus icon, then congratulations: you have access to the feature. If you don't, you will need to use a workaround to upload posts to Instagram with Chrome.

The test only applies to posts, not Reels or Stories.

For those that have access to the test, here's how to use the new feature...

How to Post to Instagram From Your Computer

The new feature works similarly to the mobile Instagram app, with a few extra steps and slight differences.

To create a new post, click the Plus icon on the top right of the website.

This will open a popup window. Either choose Select From Computer or drag and drop a video or photo into the popup to upload a picture.

If you want to upload multiple photos and videos at once, we suggest using the Select From Computer option.

Once you have selected the media you want to upload, you can choose the layout: original, square, portrait, or landscape. This will apply to all images if you have chosen multiple photos to post.

You can click and drag on the thumbnails to adjust the order of the pictures or videos. You can also use the slider on the bottom left of an image to adjust the zoom level.

If you click and drag an image, you can adjust its framing.

When your pictures have the desired framing and zoom levels, click Next.

Just like in the app, the next step allows you to apply filters and edit the image for contrast and other settings. When you are happy with your adjustments, select Next.

Now you can write your caption, add emojis, add a location, add alt text, and adjust comment settings on the post. When you're ready to post, select Share.

The popup window will say Your post has been uploaded once your media has been posted to Instagram.

The Benefits of Using the New PC Upload Tool

You may wonder what the point of using the new upload feature is if you've been relying on the app for so long. So, what benefits does the new upload feature on Instagram have?

The biggest benefit is that it's a quality-of-life upgrade for users of the Instagram website. If you use multiple devices or store your photos on the cloud, using the PC upload tool can be one of the most convenient ways to post your pictures to the platform.

It saves you the hassle of installing the Windows app or needing to use workarounds to emulate the mobile app or website. And if you use a standalone camera instead of your phone's camera, you would now only need to transfer your files to your PC rather than your phone or tablet.

By uploading from your computer, you also have a lot more screen to work with, rather than needing to work with the limited display on your mobile device.

Finally, it gives users more options and flexibility. Giving users more choice and not restricting the website so much lets them use Instagram the way that suits them best.

Enjoy More Convenience on Instagram

Hopefully, more users can enjoy the new feature as the test expands on Instagram. Being able to upload from your PC adds more flexibility to the website experience.

With any luck, the company will continue to expand functionality on the website to make it more well-rounded for users.
