There are a number of reasons to unpair your Apple Watch from an iPhone. You might want to sell the device or give it to another user. Unpairing is also a useful troubleshooting step to try if you're experiencing problems with your Apple Watch.

We'll walk you through how to unpair an Apple Watch both with and without an iPhone.

How to Unpair an Apple Watch With an iPhone

If you have the iPhone paired to the Apple Watch, open the companion Watch app on the iPhone. In the My Watch tab, select All Watches at the top of the page.

Tap the i next to the Watch you'd like to unpair. On the next page, choose Unpair Apple Watch.

Before the unpairing process starts, you may need to disable Activation Lock by entering your Apple ID password. If you're not aware of this important security feature, take a look at our guide on how to manage the Apple Watch Activation Lock.

Your iPhone will automatically make a backup of the Apple Watch before unpairing it. This process is also how you erase your Apple Watch.

How to Unpair an Apple Watch Without a Paired iPhone

If for some reason you don't have the old paired iPhone, it's still possible to unpair your Apple Watch. This is also how you reset an Apple Watch without having the paired iPhone.

On the Watch itself, head to Settings > General > Reset. Choose Erase all Content and Settings. You also have to enter the Apple Watch passcode, if there is one.

Reset Apple Watch Without Paired iPhone

If you have a cellular-enabled Apple Watch, and you plan to keep it, choose to keep your plan.

If you're not keeping the Apple Watch, choose to delete the plan information from the settings. You also need to contact your carrier to completely cancel the plan.

Just to note, resetting the Apple Watch without the paired iPhone doesn't remove Activation Lock.

Get Your Apple Watch Paired to Your iPhone Again

Whether you have the paired iPhone handy or not, it takes just a few steps to unpair your Apple Watch from the handset.

To get your Apple Watch back to normal, all you need to do is pair it with your iPhone again. Or if you upgraded to a new watch, pair that to your iPhone instead.
