With all the chaos on Twitter since Elon Musk's takeover, many users have started looking for alternatives to the microblogging site. One such popular alternative is Mastodon.

So, how do you get started on the platform? Signing up has been made easier—here's all you need to know about how to join Mastodon and get to microblogging in peace.

What Is Mastodon?

Mastodon is an open-source social media platform that offers different servers called instances. Unlike Twitter, which has centrally run servers, Mastodon's instances are independently run by its users. Each instance has its own policies, terms of service, privacy options, and more.

But some of the differences between Mastodon and Twitter include the ability to post text up to 500 characters. You could also follow accounts, use hashtags, and have a timeline view of your feed. But the biggest hindrance that stopped many everyday users from jumping into Mastodon is the initial sign-up requirements.

Mastodon Makes Signing Up Easier

As Mastodon was first envisioned as a decentralized social media platform, you must join a Mastodon instance to start posting. So, instead of having one central server where everything is posted, shared, and saved, Mastodon has a multitude of servers.

Thankfully, Mastodon has made things simpler. In a post on the Mastodon Blog on May 1, 2023, the platform noted that users can now sign up for an account and join a Mastodon-operated server by default.

According to Mastodon CEO and founder Eugen Rochko:

We understand that deciding which Mastodon service provider to kick off your experience with can be confusing…To make this step easier, we now have a default sign-up option that works with a server we operate.

How to Sign Up for Mastodon

You no longer need to find a specific instance to join Mastodon (although you can still find and join one later). With that, signing up for a Mastodon account has never been simpler.

Here's how you can join the microblogging platform.

Sign Up for a Mastodon Account via the Mastodon App

Most users prefer microblogging on their smartphones. Here's how to create a Mastodon account on Android or iOS.

  1. Download the Mastodon app.
  2. If you're on the app, tap on Join mastodon.social.
  3. On the next screen, read the Server Rules, then tap I Agree.
  4. On the Your Privacy page, tap I Agree.
  5. You'll then head to the Create Account screen. Fill out your information, then tap Next.
  6. On the Check Your Inbox page, tap on Open email app. This will open your default email address, where you need to find Mastodon's confirmation email. Open the verification email and tap on Confirm and return to Mastodon for Android/iOS.
  7. With that, you can now log in to the Mastodon app. However, you can't immediately begin posting on mastodon.social as Mastodon staff might take time to review your application.
