The Workout app is one of the most popular ways to use the Apple Watch. It’s a great way to track all of your exercise information to help meet your fitness goals.

And starting with watchOS 9, you can create a custom workout on the Apple Watch to modify your exercise with additions like a warmup period, repeating works and recovery intervals, and more. We’ll show you how.

Create a Custom Workout

To create a custom workout, open the Workout app on your Apple Watch. Turn the Digital Crown or scroll down the screen. You can view all of the available workouts, even some lesser-known options you might not have heard about.

When you find the workout you want, select the ••• and the Create Workout. Then you’ll choose Custom.

In the Custom section, there are a number of additions you can choose for a workout.

First up, you can add a warmup period. To do that, select Warmup and then choose Time, Distance, or Open. It’s also possible to add a heart rate alert to your warmup. That uses the built-in heart rate monitor on the Apple Watch.

At the end of the workout, there is also the ability to create a cooldown period. Choose Cooldown and then Time, Distance, or Open. When selecting Open, you can also pair it with a heart rate alert.

You can also create work and recovery intervals for a workout. Select Add and choose Work or Recovery. Finally, select Time, Distance, or Open. You can add multiple work and recovery intervals.
