What Is Starring on Canva?

Canva Starred folder.

You might call it favoriting, or saving, or another term—Canva calls it starring. Simply, starring an item on Canva means you save it in a folder for later. This is a super helpful feature when there are so many elements, templates, photos, videos, or other media to search for in Canva. Before finding out about starring in Canva, read our beginner's guide to Canva for any first-time tips and tricks.

While you can search for elements by name or code in Canva, it’s a hassle having to search each time you want to look for something. Starring on Canva cuts the search time down. You can keep all your favorite design elements in one central place.

How to Favorite Something on Canva

You can star or favorite elements from both the browser and app versions of Canva. You can star most assets, whether it’s a template, graphic element, video, audio, or photo. Unfortunately, you can’t star brand elements like fonts or color palettes.

From an existing artboard, find elements, templates, photos, or other design assets using the search bar. You can do this from the Design or Elements tabs. The Design tab should be used to find templates, and the Elements tab can be used for everything else. You can create and publish your own Canva templates, but it's great to know how to save others too.

Element menu on Canva

Once you’ve found a Canva design or element you like, hover your cursor over it if you’re on the browser, and select the Ellipsis in the corner. If you’re using the app, tap and hold the design element to reveal the menu.

From the menu that appears, click or tap the Star option. This will change the menu option to Unstar—which you can select to remove the item from your starred list if needed. At the top of the page, a temporary popup will appear that you can select and view your starred item in the starred folder.

You have now starred your Canva design element. So how do you actually find it again?

Where to Find Your Starred Items on Canva

Starred elements and templates are in the same place on both the app and browser versions of Canva, but each version makes it slightly different to find them. After starring your design assets, you can easily find them to use in future designs.

Canva Projects Folders

From the homepage, select the Projects tab and Folders > Starred. Select your chosen template to open it as a new design.

If you’re already in the midst of a Canva project, and you want to find a saved element to add or open a new template, it’s quite simple. From the artboard, on the lefthand menu, select the Projects tab, then select Folders on the horizontal menu under the dropdown.

Your saved elements and templates will appear here, so you can select any to add directly to the project you’re working on. You can add a template to a new page of your design or drag an element right onto your current artboard. You can recolor Canva elements to suit your design’s color palette and make a seamless design.

Find Starred Assets on the Canva App

Whether you use the phone app or the tablet app, it all works the same. You can find your Starred folder from the homepage. Tap Projects, then you can see your Folders menu with Starred within it. You may have to scroll to find Folders within the Projects page, or you can tap Folders at the top to save some scrolling.

If accessing your starred folder before starting a design, you can tap any starred element or template to open it as a new design. You can also access your starred folder while working on a current design.

When on any project, it’s easy to add a starred element to a current design or to open a new template design from a working artboard. Select the purple circle + icon in the bottom left of the artboard.

Then scroll on the bottom horizontal menu until you see the Projects folder. Tap it to open. Then scroll on the horizontal menu below the dropdown menu and open Folders, and you’ll see your Starred folder there. Open it to see your starred items.

Tap on any saved element in your starred folder to open the element on your current project. If you tap to open a starred template, it will open as a new project rather than adding pages to your current project.

Star Your Canva Favorites for Future Use

Canva has a wealth of design elements and templates for you to discover and use. It can be frustrating to search for them and even more frustrating when you can’t find ones that you loved again. By starring your favorite elements or Canva templates, you never have to search or lose them again. They’ll be tucked away safely in your Starred folder for whenever you need them in your designs.
