Hopefully, your experience on Discord is a smooth one that you enjoy with friends and other cool people you meet online. But if someone acts inappropriately, it's important that you know how to report that user on Discord.

We'll show you how to report a Discord user on both the desktop and mobile apps so you don't have to put up with improper behavior.

How to Report a Discord User on Mobile

It's easy to report someone on Discord using the iPhone or Android app. All you have to do is navigate to the message you want to report. Press and hold on it, then choose Report from the bottom of the list. You'll see this option appear for both DMs and public messages. On the resulting screen, select a category for the report.

If you want to report an entire server on Discord, open it from the left switcher, tap the three-dot button at the top, and choose Report Server from the list.

That's all you have to do—there's nothing else required on your end. However, because this method of reporting doesn't require you to add as many details, Discord recommends that you also create a full ticket for the report, as described below.

You can open the same web form (discussed in the below section) in your mobile browser, but it's easier to do this on a desktop or laptop.

How to Report Someone on Discord for Desktop

Discord's desktop programs don't have a report function built into them like the mobile apps. Instead, you'll need to visit Discord's Submit a request page, which you can access by clicking Submit a request at the top-right of support.discord.com. This is the most common method of reporting someone on Discord.

On this page, select Trust & Safety in the What can we help you with? field, then enter your email address. Under How can we help?, there are three relevant options for reporting people:

  • Report abuse or harassment: Used to report cyberbullying, explicit content/behavior, hacks, malware, scams, fraud, violent extremism, and similar.
  • Report spam: Used to report a user or bot spamming you, a server dedicated to promoting spam, and similar.
  • Report other issue: Any other reports, including underage users, self-harm concerns, or a banned user creating new accounts.

Depending on what you pick, you'll see different choices in the What would you like to report? box below it. And below that, some options will also show In what way? and Where is the content? boxes to provide full context.

Fill out the boxes to best describe the situation you're reporting. For most reports, you'll be asked to provide a Message Link to the offending communication. To grab this, simply right-click on the message in Discord and choose Copy Message Link. Then click inside the box and hit Ctrl + V (Windows) or Cmd + V (Mac) to paste the link.

The link should look like this for public messages: https://discord.com/channels/xxxxx/xxxxx/xxxxx

Getting the Discord Message IDs

For simple reports, you can continue to complete the Discord reporting form. However, it's also possible to provide additional IDs with your report. It's a good idea to do this to provide as much information as possible.

You'll need to enable Developer Mode in Discord. Do this by clicking the Gear icon at the bottom-left of Discord's interface, then selecting Advanced from the left sidebar and enabling the Developer Mode slider.

Discord Developer Mode

With this mode enabled, you can right-click on any Discord message, user, or server and choose Copy ID. This is a permanent identifier for the item, which you can provide in your report. If you're reporting a server-wide concern, you should copy the server ID.

Now, you'll need to complete the Subject and Description boxes. Inside Subject, enter a succinct summary of the situation, like "Spammer sending fraudulent links in my server." In the Description, you can add any relevant details about the incident, including the IDs you copied earlier, to provide Discord staff with more information.

There's also an Attachments field. Use this to upload a screenshot of the message, or anything else that's relevant to the situation, as additional documentation. Note that Discord does not accept screenshots alone as proof, since they're easy to manipulate. Message links are more important to include with your report.

When you're done, hit Submit to complete your Discord report. Based on your report, the company "may take a number of steps, including issuing a warning, removing the content, or removing the accounts and/or servers responsible." The company will email you after it takes a look at the situation.

What Should You Report on Discord?

Of course, you shouldn't abuse the report function on Discord. It's important to only report behavior that goes against Discord's terms of service.

Before you file your report, have a look at the Discord Community Guidelines page. This lays out what isn't acceptable on Discord. If someone is breaking these rules, their behavior likely falls under one of the categories described above and is reportable.

But if it's just something you don't care for, you shouldn't report it. Instead, there are other steps you can take to shut up annoying people on Discord.

Options Aside From Reporting on Discord

If you don't think someone's behavior is reportable but still want to do something about it, you can take other steps. An easy one is to block the user on Discord. To do this, right-click on their name and hit Block, then confirm the prompt.

Discord Block User

Once you block the person, you won't see their messages in shared servers anymore; you have to select the placeholder text to see the message. The person also won't be able to contact you via DMs.

If someone is causing trouble in a server, you should consider reporting them to the server moderators. You'll usually find these people at the top of the list of users in your current server, which shows on the right side. Get in touch with a mod about your concerns; they will be able to take stronger action like banning the person from the server.

Report Issues on Discord to Keep Everyone Safe

Discord is usually a fun place to hang out, but when people break the rules, you should report them. Don't let people get away with harmful behavior that ruins everyone else's experience. And if you're not sure whether something is a reportable behavior, ask a server mod.
