Are retweets and quote tweets clogging up your Twitter home timeline? Here is a quick guide to how you can remove each from your timeline, so you don't have to dig through them to find the tweets you want to see.

Retweets and Quote Tweets Can Be Annoying

You’re seeing all of these tweets from people you do not follow or even know on your home timeline. This can be understandably frustrating. Many of these tweets are probably retweets and quote tweets, and there is an easy way to remove them.

A retweet is when someone re-posts a tweet from someone else to their own account. You will see retweets from people on your timeline (or home feed). There will be greyed-out text above the tweet that says “Example Name Retweeted” with a little retweet symbol that looks like two arrows.

A quote tweet is a retweet with some content or text from the retweeter attached to it. You'll see the added content above the original tweet.

Why You May Want to Remove Retweets

Think about why you use Twitter. Are you looking for the latest news? Do you want to see what your friends are up to? Or maybe you want to join the conversation about a live event or show.

These reasons may influence whether retweets are positive additions to your timeline or if they get in the way of the content you actually want to see. Retweets help expand the account and content types that you see, so you can discover new things you may be interested in.

But retweets and quote tweets can also clog up your home timeline . Retweeting is as easy as tapping a button. You can also make your Twitter timeline less toxic by turning off inflammatory retweets and quote tweets. The method in this article will show you how to mute these reposts and replies completely.

How to Remove Retweets From Your Timeline

To remove retweets from your timeline on the Twitter mobile app, you will need to use a simple workaround by blocking the retweet backend code. Just use the following steps:

1. Tap your profile picture icon in the top left of the screen

2. Scroll down and tap Settings and privacy

3. Tap Privacy and Safety

4. Tap Mute and Block then Muted words

5. Tap Add on the bottom right corner and type "RT @"

Once you return to your home timeline, you will notice there are no longer any retweets.

Use the same process for quote tweets, except type "QT @" during the last step. Now you will be able to see just the original tweets from all of the accounts you follow!

To do this on the desktop Twitter site, tap the three dots icon on the sidebar and follow the same steps as for the app.

Retweets and quote tweets will be blocked from your home timeline on any device when you log into your account. If you change your mind and want retweets to reappear, just follow the steps to access the muted words screen and tap the one you want to delete. Then tap delete word, and you will be back to your default home timeline.

What if You Only Want to Block Some Retweets?

You might have that one friend that just retweets everything and spams your timeline. You don't want to lose all of the retweets on your timeline, but you don't want to unfollow your friend either.

There is a way to mute retweets from single Twitter accounts by going to that account and tapping the Turn Off Retweets option. This way, you won't entirely remove retweets from your timeline.

Better Tweets and Better Content

Now that you can clear clunky retweets and quote tweets from your home timeline, you can see more of the content that you actually come to Twitter for.
