You may feel that Wordle is tough enough already, but did you know Wordle has a hard mode? Well, it does, and if you want a real challenge, then you should use it. Throw caution to the wind; forget your perfect 100% success run and get that Wordle muscle really working.

Here's how to play Wordle in hard mode.

What Is Wordle Hard Mode?

The name should give things away here. Wordle hard mode is the same Wordle you play every day at exactly 00:00:01, except with added difficulty. You are still guessing a five-letter word, and you still have to do it in six guesses. The letters will also light up yellow for a correct letter, and green for a correct letter in the correct place.

So what makes hard mode different? Well, with hard mode operating, you must use previous correct guesses in any subsequent guess.

wooden letters

Say, for example, your starting word is TEARS, and you get a yellow T and E, and a green S. When you play your next word, it has to use those three correct guesses, so you'll try the T and A in a different place, and the word must finish with an S.

In hard mode, you can't have TEARS as your first turn, then (with your three hints) try a word like CHUMP, which contains none of the same letters. You always have to go with the clues from the previous word.

How Do You Play Wordle in Hard Mode?

It is very easy. On mobile or desktop browser, simply navigate to the Settings menu. This is the little cog at the top right of your screen. Click that and you'll find several options. One of those is a toggle slider for Hard Mode. Click it, and it will change color, showing that you have successfully launched hard mode.

Now you can just start a game with the new rules in place.

There are other options in here, too. If the bright white background is too much for you, you can toggle Dark Mode on and off. There are also accessibility settings for those with color blindness.

I know, right? What kind of lunatic does this?! Well, as mentioned, you might already employ this tactic, anyway. Even without enabling hard mode. It makes sense to use letters you already know are in the solution; it saves your guesses and helps you win faster (if you want a Wordle tip to take away).

So, if you don't find Wordle challenging enough or are growing a bit bored with playing it, then you'll definitely want to up the ante and get hard mode running. Likewise, if you actually want to improve your Wordle scores, then you should use hard mode. Honestly, it works wonders even if it is a little more difficult, initially.
