Anyone who's experienced an internet dropout while using Google Chrome (or Chrome boffins, of course) will know all about the classic Dinosaur Game.

The arcade-style "platformer" is either a fun use of your time while you wait for the internet to come back on, or an easily accessible distraction to break up your day.

In celebration of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (being held in 2021 for obvious reasons), Google has added another game mode that allows your Dino sprite to run, swim, surf, perform gymnast moves, and compete in track and field activities.

How to Play the Tokyo 2020 Game in Chrome

The new Olympics-inspired Dino game is very easy to access once you know how...

  1. Open a new tab in Google Chrome. Or, alternatively, if you're using Wi-Fi, turn it off to access the game directly.
  2. Type in chrome://dino in the URL bar. You should see a dinosaur ready to run.
  3. If you're on a computer, press the space bar to begin, or if you're on a phone/tablet, tap the screen.
  4. Play the game as you normally would, pressing the space bar or tapping the screen to leap over cacti, birds, and other obstacles like rocks.
  5. When you see an Olympic torch, run into it, and enjoy the new Olympics mode!

Running into the torch changes the game to Olympic mode, putting your dino in a themed outfit, and changing the obstacles to Olympic sports obstacles like hurdles, balance beams, or... rocks in surfing?

Restart the Dino Game to Try New Modes

This version of the game is very random, with no predictability as to whether you'll end up swimming, surfing, taking part in an equestrian event, gymnastics, or track and field. Unfortunately, the only way to try and experience each of them is to restart the game or close the browser.

It's also important to make sure you have the most current version of Chrome.

Notably, you can engage in hours of dino-sized Olympic fun regardless of if you're on a Windows PC, Mac, Linux computer, or Chromebook.
