I recently ran across an older article on Makeuseof titled "5 Interesting Uses For A Spare Old Smartphone".
I have an older HTC Evo sitting here collecting dust and would like to try using it as a remote for my TV and for Plex Media Server, etc. However since this phone is deactivated with Sprint, because I am now using my newer Samsung Galaxy S3, how do I get applications that are on the Google Play store onto this older cell phone?

As long as you have Wi-Fi access and use your Gmail login (or any Gmail login to access the Play Store), you should be able to use it much like an android portable media player or Wi-Fi only tablet. Turn on Wi-Fi on the phone, enter the passkey information, then open the Play Store to download what you wish.
