The PS5 is a powerful gaming machine, capable of beautiful graphics and home to some outstanding new PlayStation exclusives like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Demon's Souls. It's also capable of a 120Hz output, which helps your games look smooth and feel great.

As long as your TV is capable, it's easy to boost your refresh rate to 120Hz, but how do you do that? Let's break it down.

What Do You Need to Enable 120Hz Output on Your PS5?

To enable a 120Hz output on your PS5 (it doesn't default to this output out of the box), you need a TV or gaming monitor that supports it and an HDMI 2.1 connection. Some TVs that may not have supported 120Hz in the past are supporting it now after firmware updates, so make sure your device's firmware is fully up to date.

Related: Lessons Sony Should Learn From the PS5 LaunchIn order to check whether your current TV or gaming monitor supports a 120Hz output, navigate to your PS5's Settings cog on the home screen. Once you're in settings, go to Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Output Information. Then, under 'Information for the connected HDMI device,' you should see what frequencies your device supports. If 120Hz isn't on the list, your device doesn't currently support a 120Hz refresh rate.

And if your device doesn't currently support it, you're not alone. A lot of TVs, even modern TVs from 2021, aren't yet capable of supporting 4K at 120Hz. Slowly but surely, they're becoming more mainstream.

How Do You Enable 120Hz Output on Your PS5?

Once you've determined whether your TV can output at 120Hz, it's time to turn on your PlayStation 5. Enabling 120Hz on your PS5 is a simple process.

On the PS5's home screen, navigate to the settings cog gear in the top right corner of the screen. From there, select Screen and Video > Video Output. When you select Enable 120 Hz Output, you'll be able to set this to 'Automatic' if it's not already.

Even though you enable 120Hz in your settings, this doesn't mean that all your games will support a 120Hz refresh rate. A few of the games that currently support a 120Hz refresh rate include Borderlands 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Doom Eternal, and Destiny 2. Although there may not be many games right now that support such a high frame rate, it's nice that the PS5 can support it for future games.

There is, however, another setting you can change to prioritize higher frame rates over visual enhancements. In your PS5's settings, navigate to Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets.

Under Performance Mode or Resolution Mode, you can change what preference your games default to. It's traditionally set to 'Game Default,' meaning that whatever game you play will automatically default to whatever they think is best for the game, speed or graphics.

If you set it to 'Performance Mode,' all your games will automatically default to a higher refresh rate if a game has that option. Alternatively, 'Resolution Mode' will prioritize better graphics and visual enhancements, like ray tracing.

As an example, in Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, there's are two different game modes. One plays at 30 frames per second and looks gorgeous; it's crisp and you can see ray tracing in all its glory. The other plays at 60fps and, although you lose the stunning graphics, the game still looks great and it feels buttery smooth. 'Performance Mode' on the PS5 would make the game default to 60fps and 'Resolution Mode' would make it default to 30fps with better graphics.

Now You Can Change Your PS5 Hz Rate

If you've managed to snag a PS5, you know how great of a console it is. Although there are plenty of improvements that Sony could make, it's still a brilliantly powerful console. Load times are exponentially faster and, of course, the graphics look a heck of a lot better. There are a lot of other things to love about the PS5, but enabling a speedy 120Hz output is certainly one of them.
