Many gamers will know that odd feeling at the end of a long Switch gaming session when they can’t seem to sleep.

Sometimes, it’s the adrenaline from beating a tough boss. Other times, it can be because of too much blue light exposure. Thankfully, Nintendo saves the day with dark mode.

What Is Dark Mode?

Dark mode is a display setting that uses light-colored text over dark-colored backgrounds. While in dark mode, your console will emit less light while still allowing you to read text comfortably.

Aside from its aesthetic benefits, dark mode also reduces the blue light emitted with light backgrounds. Blue lights, some studies say, make it difficult for users to sleep after significant exposure.

Great for low-light settings, dark mode is best for gamers who use their Switch at odd hours of the night. Dark mode also helps make your Switch battery last longer.

Screens with lighter backgrounds use more power, so switching to a darker background will incrementally reduce the playing time for handheld consoles like the Switch.

Steps to Enable Dark Mode on Switch

The Switch does not have an explicit feature that says dark mode. However, it has a way to choose the general color scheme of your Switch interface from white or black.

Nintendo Switch change theme

To change your Switch into the dark mode, open your console home page and select System Settings. Then, scroll down and select Themes. Lastly, choose Basic Black.

If you realize you prefer a lighter background and want to undo Dark Mode, you can select Basic White instead.

Make Use of the Switch Dark Mode

Whether it’s because of personal preference or to save battery, there are plenty of advantages to keeping your Switch on dark mode. Not only will you keep yourself from experiencing optical discomfort, but you can also play more games for longer on your Switch.

However, if you prefer the lighter version of the Switch interface, you may benefit from keeping your console docked to the TV. With this, you’ll have fewer problems with eye strain and don’t have to worry about running out of battery while you game.
