No electronic device is perfect, and your Google Home and Nest smart gadgets are no exception. Occasionally, Google Assistant might have trouble hearing you, especially if there is a lot of noise around. There can also be times when it might suddenly respond out of nowhere without you even saying “Hey Google.”

If you’re experiencing either of these scenarios, then it's likely that you need to adjust your device’s sensitivity to the wake words like “OK Google” and “Hey Google.” Here is how you can do it.

Adjusting the Sensitivity of Your Speaker's "Hey Google"

Changing how sensitive your Google Home device responds to your wake words is actually pretty straightforward.

Launch your Google Home app from your Android or iOS device. If your device is fresh out of the box, here's how to set up your Google Nest Hub (if this is the one you're using).

Make sure that you’re using the same account that you’ve used to set up the device in the beginning. Otherwise, you won’t be able to access the sensitivity setting.

After opening the Google Home app, tap the name of your device on the home screen. This will display the volume control for the device.

Click the gear icon in the top-right corner of the screen to bring you to the device’s settings. Head to Audio under Device features and tap the “Hey Google” sensitivity on the bottom-most part.

Here, you will be presented with a slider. The left side makes the device less sensitive to "Hey Google," so it doesn't unintentionally wake up. In contrast, the right side makes the device more sensitive, so you can still activate it even in a noisy room.

Test the device by saying, “Hey Google” or “OK Google” followed by a command that you can pick from this Google Home command cheat sheet. If it still isn’t responding the way you want it to, adjust the slider accordingly.

Fine-Tune Your Google Home Wake Word for Better Conversations

Your new “Hey Google” sensitivity applies to anyone who uses the device, whether they are logged in as a primary user or not. If the sensitivity doesn’t work for one person, you can always go ahead and adjust it to suit.
