Friends took pictures at an event. I am going to put them all on a disc, then distribute copies. What's the best way to get the image files?

I have a few suggestions to make In addition to Dalsan's excellent, advice. First, if you are using Dropbox, get the Air Dropper add on, which will allow you to request the files from your friends and they, in turn, will be able to upload the pictures without the need for each of them to have a dropbox account. The files will be delivered to your dropbox. Secondly, your friends can use file sharing site such as minus.com, where they upload the file(s) and send you the URL. There are many such sites (I'm partial to minus as it's very easy to use) and most of them allow the sharer to set a password if the files to be accessible to the public at large.

It depends on how many pictures and what the size of all of the pictures together would be. The quickest and easiest solution would be through cloud services like DropBox, Google Drive, SkyDrive (Hotmail/Live email feature), or other services that you may know of. The options I mentioned are free and simple to use; just sign up, upload the files (pictures), and share a link you create in the cloud storage service to whomever you like. This would work by having your friend use an account created in one of these services, upload the pics, then share the link to you. From there, you can use the link to access the pictures, download them, then create copies as you like. If you were to create an account, you could do the same and share a link to whomever you like as well. When you want to stop sharing the pics, just change the sharing options within your account for the link and files. Let us know if you need help with setting up a cloud service account.

Most of these services allow for you to individually "whitelist" each person you want to share the pictures with, meaning that if your friend's friends wanted to use the URL (website link) that you shared so that your allowed friends can view the pictures, they would receive an error stating that they do not have permission to view the files until you add them to the allowed list. I think that you are able to change the permission to only allow viewing of the files instead of allowing your friends to download them, if that is an option you wish to have at some point. As far as I know, Dropbox is the easiest to use, and there are web apps as well as smartphone apps for Android, Windows Phone, and iPhone. http://www.dropbox.com
