when are setting up the import, choose imap, not pop! these are different e-mail protocols. the first just lets you control the mail remotelly (internet email clients wouldn't exist without it) the second "downloads" all the email data into the client (e.g: if you are using outlook, it will download the mail into your pc, and it will not stay on the gmail mail servers)

You have to set up Gmail so that after messages are downloaded, they should not be deleted. You also may want to consider using IMAP instead of POP.

G mail have an option of keeping a copy of message on server with pop protocols or either you can archive it.The only way to view the email, not to download, just try to configure your email account to just download the header of email message.

Bruce is absolutely correct, but I thought I'd like to Google's instructions for setting up Outlook. Follow the "IMAP" instructions. http://support.google.com/mail/bin/static.py?hl=en&ts=1668960&page=ts.cs&from=75726&rd=1Once you have IMAP set up Outlook will sync instead of downloading/deleting, meaning everything will work as it should

"Can you have Gmail connect with Outlook as a view and not download and delete from the Gmail account?"I'm not altogether clear what you are trying to achieve. Do you mean Outlook to view Gmail or the other way round? Do you mean use one account to delete from the other or just that having viewed in the second account then delete it but just from the second account, leaving the original untouched?

If you have seen the Forwarding and IMAP/POP Settings of Gmail under Settings menu,at POP download section,it specifies the action to be taken when messages are accessed with POP.You can select "Keep Gmail's copy in the inbox" to achieve what you want. For better understanding, see the screenshot under the link below -http://email.about.com/od/gmailtips/ss/wt010605.htm

Like Bruce said, you can use IMAP instead of POP3 but you need to know that even you use outlook to view your message, it needs to download it first in order you can view the message. The one you can do is to configure your outlook not directly deleted your message in gmail account when you delete it from your outlook.

In IMAP, messages will only be deleted from the server if you delete them locally (i.e. in Outlook). I think this is the behaviour Charles is after, and his note about deletion referred to how things work in POP3 (everything either gets deleted from the server after download, or stays on the server for a fixed period).

Instead of using the POP3 settings to grab your Gmail, use the IMAP (imap.googlemail.com, port 993, SSL/TLS) settings instead. This will keep your mailbox synchronized instead of simply downloading all of the messages from the server and deleting them after they have been downloaded (default POP3 behavior in Outlook).
