I want to know how to create a simple network between my laptops so to allow a user to access shared information on the desktop of other laptops on the network.

If they are both running Win7, you can set up a Homegroup on one of them and connect the other to it. When setting up the Homegroup, you can then select the items you want to share between the machines.

You did not mention the operating system so I will assume you are using Windows for now. You need to make sure both laptops are on the same Workgroup.
