@Chann although I haven't used it personally but the chance to damage your iPhone 4S is very low! Also I have found another similar tool which is $34 cheaper than ''Wondershare Data Recovery''Besides SMS recovery this tool allows me to measure my chatting behavior as well with my iPhone contacts. Hope this helpshttp://www.allyourtexts.com/Artash

Exactly, SMS text messages are backed up with the iPhone - whether it's locally or to iCloud. If you've already written over the backup that had them (as in, backed up after the delete) then they're gone.If you still have a backup available from a time where you had the messages on your iPhone, all you have to do is erase the iPhone and retrieve deleted text messages from iPhone with backup. If you have backed up your iPhone with iTunes, you can directly restore with iTunes. Here is the guide from Apple offical website:

If you are still looking around for help, the following 2 options could prove to be useful provided you had synced your iphone:-1. Plug in your iPhone to your computer and pull up iTunes. Click on Restore button and select the restore from such and such backup. You phone goes back in the past and you get everything back on your phone. The only drawback is that you'll loose all the info that you got after taking the backup.2. Get a backup recovery software which helps you extract data from the backup. I would personally recommend that you visit the following website and choose the one that suits you:-http://www.recover-iphone-data.com/iphoneI have used the total one, which recovers everything including contacts and texts.Hope this helps!Angel

I use a great app called PhoneView to back up my iPhone. When you connect, you can save your SMS messages as a PDF. It seems to have the ability to pull in messages that I previously thought I deleted.http://ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/

You may try to use a third party recovery software like MiniTool Mac Data Recovery to recover your files.

I would also recommend a third party tool. Decipher Text Message recovers deleted iPhone sms so I would give that a try. I think it all depends on what messages are in your last iTunes back up. They seem to have a free trial which you might want to start with. http://deciphertools.com/recover-deleted-iphone-text-messages.html

Ideally you should have both the contacts and messages backup in your iTunes and with iCloud account. If you do, then you should be able to restore from there itself. You do not need any 3rd. party software, Apple itself has the solution.
