What are the best web sites to learn about the coolest special effects used in movies, and to learn what free, low cost, or trial tools are available for me to tinker with?

I'm especially interested in knowing about computer-generated special effects, science-fiction and horror movie special effects. Loved the effects from Lord of the Rings, Matrix, some Kung Fu movie I can't remember the name of where the guy is running up trees and doing all these real interesting moves as he battles his opponents, 28 Days Later where the zombies run real scary fast, where a tidal wave flood wipes out a city, X-Men, Spider Man - you get the idea!

I'm wondering if I can come close to some of these effects for effect in my (as yet unrealized) YouTube videos.

Also - any websites where people with the same aspirations share knowledge through articles and forums as we do here on MakeUseOf and maybe even share their self-produced, low budget YouTube videos?
