How can users protect themselves from viruses that are spread "over the network" - and what particular software components are compromised to enable this ?

As well as antivirus, antimalware, firewall etc. you should keep your OS and apps uptodate. Microsoft Update keeps Microsoft OS and apps updated. You should also keep browsers, pdf readers, utilities etc. uptodate so security holes are filled as they are discovered.
