So here is my story. I have a Seagate 1TB Back up Plus and I wanted to back up my Windows 7 HP Laptop and also make an image of the drive. I did that, then installed Windows 8 onto my laptop. Long story short, I didn't like Windows 8 and used my recovery disks to get my laptop working again, and it does.

However, now I want to extract some important files I need from the external hard drive and I don't know how. Also, when I try to open any of the files from the external hard drive, it tells me I don't have permission to do so.

Please help. I hope I didn't lose everything. Thanks so much for any help.

Perhaps if you change your account to administrative, the file will open. Have you tried any extraction software besides manually opening them? Have you successfully removed Windows 8 in place of 7?

If your problem is simply not being able to extract the files because of permissions, you should try taking ownership of the files. This page from Microsoft should aid you if you don't know how to do it.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753659.aspx

assuming you made a backup image on your 1 TB external hd, you can follow the FIDELIS process

Hello, can you tell me more about the version of windows 7 you are running? These are the instructions for windows 7 ultimate x64:-- click on start-- control panel-- system and security-- backup and restore-- under the Restore section, click on restore my files-- browse to your external and select the files-- click on next and waitLet me know how it goes. Keep in mind that if you created a system image your best bet is to recover that image first and then recover the files.
