If it's an external drive, and you want to share files with a Mac owner, make sure it's formatted FAT32. Not all versions of Mac OS/OS X support NTFS without an addon program like NTFS-3G for Mac. If you're trying to use it with a Smart TV, you may not be able to use NTFS at all.

Is it not recognised by any computer, or only by some? If the latter, what operating systems are on the computers that recognise the drive, and which OSs on those that don't?

hope that the hard drive itself is not damaged, it can be the enclosure, you have to get a new Hard Drive Enclosure, maybe to purchase identical hard drive and switch the disk.
