Split-screen co-op is a staple element of Halo as a franchise. But this feature is sorely missing from Halo Infinite, at least officially. Luckily, you can still enable split-screen co-op in Halo Infinite. And while it requires a few easy menu glitches, the feature runs surprisingly well.

But if you're wondering why 343 Industries stopped supporting the split-screen Campaign for Halo Infinite and how to enable it unofficially within the game, we can help.

Why Isn’t Split-Screen Co-Op an Official Feature of Halo Infinite?

Due to the turbulent launch of Halo Infinite, many core features you may expect from a Halo game were missing from the get-go. So, if you planned on jumping onto Halo Infinite for Forge, co-op Campaign, or custom games, you may have been sorely disappointed.

Going forward, 343 Industries had to focus on adding missing content to Halo Infinite. For instance, playing custom games in Halo Infinite was eventually made available for you to play.

Split-screen co-op Campaign, however, was announced as being canceled by 343 Industries in a lengthy Developer Update to move resources to other features you expect from the game.

Interestingly, the receding emphasis on couch-co-op within the gaming industry may be a factor in the cancelation of the split-screen Campaign for Halo Infinite. And you may see the emphasis on games as a service placing priority on new content for Halo Infinite as a further factor.

So, as for why split-screen co-op was canceled, you could conclude that the need for new content outweighed the need to accommodate local co-op and tipped the scales for 343 Industries.

But regardless of the shifting priorities of Halo Infinite and the industry, you can still play the split-screen co-op Campaign in Halo Infinite, just not officially.

Things You May Need to Know About Halo Infinite’s Split-Screen Co-Op

Now you know the details behind the split-screen Campaign for Halo Infinite, before you use the feature, there are still some things you need to know.

Because 343 Industries doesn't officially support local split-screen for the Campaign of Halo Infinite, you may need to know the following information before using the feature unofficially:

  • As the feature is unsupported, you may encounter bugs or glitches while playing split-screen Campaign in Halo Infinite.
  • If you play the split-screen Campaign you can only save by beating entire levels. Leaving a game before completing a level could corrupt your save file.
  • To successfully play local split-screen for the Campaign of Halo Infinite, you will need an online friend waiting in a custom game lobby.
  • Playing the split-screen Campaign unofficially in Halo Infinite requires you to have two profiles on your Xbox or PC.

While issues like save file corruption may seem dire, the file will continue from your last single-player save point. In other words, if your file corrupts, it will only erase the progress you made while playing with split-screen enabled.
