Came back from holiday and on booting my desktop Pentium 4 with onboard graphics card, the boot progressed as far as Windows XP welcome screen and the screen went scrambled. Could not see what was on the screen, tried booting in Safe Mode and last good config, still becomes scrambled. Have changed screens and both doing the same thing.

Hello, have you tried enabling the vga mode? When you start your system keep pressing the f8 key as if you are going to safe mode, but instead highlight enable vga mode and press enter. If your screen does not appear scrambled, then you are having problems with your display driver. Have you checked your device manager to see if it shows any problems with your display driver? Try updating your drives. Hopefully that will solve your problem.

Hitry this unplug it first. then replug it back in once booted.XP may have your screen refresh set to "Optimal" in display properties. Try setting it to a specific refresh in the Advanced menu under settings. XP may not be releasing the card when it reboots.Setting the screen refresh to one of the available defined values may cure the problem without having to completely powerdown.Uninstal your graphic card driver, reboot and install a new one.
