Google is rolling out a new feature to its Phone app that audibly announces who's calling you with their Caller ID or number. This new feature can be found in the latest update to the Android app.

Google Phone Now Announces Aloud Who's Calling You

Those using Google Phone on their Android device will now get audible announcements on who's calling. The app will announce the name or number of any caller and announce it while the phone rings.

Just as a quick reminder, Google Phone is Google's dialer app for Android devices. After initially only being available on Pixel devices, Google opened the app up so that any Android device can install it.

Google Phone already has some fairly nifty features, so its no surprise Google is keen to add another. While certainly not the most exciting new feature by any means, there are some specific uses for the new announcements.

For example, it would be a good accessibility feature to reduce the need to read text from the display. Or it could be helpful to let you know who's calling while you have headphones on, without the need to look at your screen.

Many other default Android phone apps already have this feature on offer, and iPhone's certainly do as well. So, it could be a welcome inclusion for some users.

How Do I Turn This On in Google Phone?

If you're looking to turn on this new feature in your Google Phone app, you'll need to make sure that you're running the latest version of the app. You can find the update on the Google Play Store if you haven't already installed it.

To turn on the new feature, in the Google Phone app, head to Settings. Then tap the Caller ID announcement heading. The new setting is turned off by default, but you can choose to have it turned on all the time or only when using a headset or headphone instead.

Once enabled, your phone will announce the name or number of whoever's calling you as per the setting you chose. The caller gets announced at the same time as the phone rings.

Is Google Phone Now a Complete Replacement?

Although it probably wasn't a make-or-break feature, the option to have callers announced will certainly be useful. Since Google Phone is offered as a replacement for your default dialer, it should at least offer the same features.

With this new addition, it seems that there isn't much left out from Google Phone. So perhaps the app can now be a complete replacement for your default dialer.
