The Google Nest ecosystem is poised to grow with a mysterious new product.

We’ll take a closer look at what we know so far and offer some educated guesses on what buyers might expect.

A New Product Revealed in an FCC Filing

Spotted by 9to5Google, the product first appeared in an FCC filing.

Any product with wireless technology like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth must first receive approval from the FCC before being sold in the United States.

In the filing, the Google device is named G28DR and referred to as “Wireless Device.” Thankfully, there is a bit more information.

It’s certified for both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi but doesn’t have any other communication protocols like NFC and UWB. The device also contains a 3.65V battery and a USB port. It will also likely be chargeable with a standard USB connection.

Is a New Nest Thermostat in the Works?

With that small bit of information, there are a few possibilities for what Google could be introducing.

Without cellular, it’s not any type of smartphone. So more than likely, the device will be part of the Nest lineup.

One possibility could be some type of new Nest Cam as many models use the same 3.65V battery mentioned in the FCC filing.

But all the models have been recent additions, and there’s no obvious hole in the lineup. You can currently purchase a battery or wired camera or a wired floodlight version that works outdoors.

Another more intriguing possibility could be a new model of the popular Nest Learning Thermostat. Even though the lower-price Nest Thermostat E arrived in 2021, the top-of-the-line model hasn't been refreshed in more than five years. Find out more about how the current Nest Thermostat works.

Google has confirmed that the older thermostat model will be updated to support the Matter protocol, which is expected to arrive in late 2022. But with the expected surge in interest in the smart home arena with Matter’s official arrival, it would make sense for Google to unveil a new Nest Thermostat.

But whatever the product is, we'll likely see it introduced sometime this fall.
