If you've ever wanted to use filters or background effects on a Google Meet call from your mobile, now you can. Google has just updated the Google Meet mobile app to include support for both filters and effects.

Google Meet Adds Filters and Effects to Mobile App

Google has updated the Google Meet app for both iOS and Android, adding filters and effects to the video calling platform. Be in blurring your background in work calls or bringing some fun to a group call with friends, you can now utilize Google Meets's filters and effects on the app.

Previously, filters and effects were only available on Google Meet calls from the web on desktop. Even going into a web browser on mobile, you still weren't able to utilize Google Meet's added filters.

Just as with the desktop version, Google Meet uses facial tracking to apply filters and effects. Whether its virtual accessories or a blurred background, Google Meet will track your head movements to apply the effects to the appropriate place on the call. This means your face won't be blurred in place of the background accidentally.

What Filters and Effects Are Available on the Google Meet App?

Just like Google Meet on the web, you must tap on the effects button in the bottom-right corner of a Meet call to bring up the effects. This button looks like it has sparkles on it, just in case you don't know what to look for.

Under the effects options, you'll see many of the same filters and effects from the web platform, and a couple of new ones too. The first effect you'll notice is for the background. Users can either set a color, image, or blur to their background, showing just themselves in the call window.

Going further into the options, users will also see color overlays and effects, and some new filters. Under the Filters section, users can add masks and virtual accessories to themselves in the video window. These filters seem to work similarly to Apple's Animoji and Memoji filters on iOS devices.

Google Knows Meet Is Here to Stay

Google Meet, as with most other video calling platforms, grew in popularity over the past year and a half. Predominantly Meet calls are used by businesses, but Google can see that an increasing number of users are using it for personal calls too.

As many users prefer video calling from their mobile device with a better camera, it seems Google wants to bring all the Meet features it can to that destination.
