Anyone who relies on Google Meet for getting together with friends and coworkers is about to get some good news. Google announced on The Keyword that it is extending the time period for free Gmail users to get unlimited calls on Meet.

Originally, that free period was slated to end on September 30, but Google has decided to extend it through part of 2021. This will make it so users can make free unlimited calls for much longer than originally anticipated.

Google Meet Keeps Free Users Talking for Longer

Google has decided to extend the 24-hour call length limit for free users through March 31, 2021. Originally, calls of this length were going to be reserved for business users. With times as they are, Google has decided to grant free users the ability to meet for extended periods.

In the blog post, Google said:

As we look ahead to a holiday season with less travel and important milestones like family reunions, PTA meetings and weddings hosted over video, we want to continue helping those who rely on Meet to stay in touch over the coming months. As a sign of our commitment, today we’re continuing unlimited Meet calls (up to 24 hours) in the free version through March 31, 2021, for Gmail accounts.

Of course, depending on the situation when March rolls around, Google could always decide to extend the 24-hour call length limit to free users even more. For the time being, it's nice to know that we can make long calls on Meet at least for a few more months.

Other Google Meet Updates

Google has been rather busy improving Google Meet. And while it may not be the go-to service for video calls (Zoom seems to be the one most people turn to), it's gaining in popularity.

Recently, Google added noise cancelation to its Meet mobile apps, making it a lot easier to get together with others while you're out and about.
