Google is constantly making strides to improve Google Maps. As one of the most used navigation apps, the company knows how important it is to keep things moving forward with it.

Today, Google took to The Keyword to announce a bunch of new AI-powered changes coming to Google Maps that'll make it much easier to get from place to place. Between better indoor navigation and suggestions for eco-friendly routes, this is quite an impressive update from Google.

Google's New Indoors Live View

The first major aspect of the update comes to Google's Live View augmented reality feature. Now, it'll work indoors at a wide variety of locations. While it won't help you find the bathroom late at night in your home, it will aid you in getting around airports, transit stations, and malls, which can be some of the most difficult places to get around.

Google cites the ability to help you find the nearest elevator, escalator, your gate, platform, baggage claim, check-in counters, ticket office, restrooms, ATMs, and more while in an airport. You'll see arrows and directions pointing you where you need to go.

The feature is rolling out gradually in a number of malls in Chicago, Long Island, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle. Google plans to roll it out in airports, malls, and transit stations in Tokyo and Zurich, with more cities coming later in the coming months.

Google Maps Eco-Friendly Routes

If you're concerned about making sure the route you take will be as fuel-efficient as possible, a new Google Maps feature will help with that. Google teamed up with the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Lab to find routes that optimize fuel efficiency based on factors like road incline and traffic congestion.

Not only will Google offer the option to choose this route, but eventually, it'll default to the route with the lowest carbon footprint if it has a similar ETA to other routes.

Google's new Eco-friendly routes launch in the US on Android and iOS later this year, with a global expansion planned at some point.

Other New Google Maps Features

Google Maps is getting quite a bit more with these new AI-powered updates. It's going to get a new weather and air quality layer that'll help you plan your routes. There's also a new feature that'll save time with curbside grocery pickup on Maps.

The company is definitely stepping up its game with these new Google Maps features, and it's going to be tough for other map apps to keep up with Google's advances.
