Google Lens on Android allows you to identify various real-life objects by just having you load their photos. The company is bringing one of Lens' features to Google Photos on the web.

This new feature will make it easier for you to identify and copy text from your images hosted with Google Photos.

What Is Google Lens?

If you don't already know, Google Lens is a service that lets you identify plants, monuments, and various other real-life objects using their photos. You load the photo of such an item in this service, and the service tells you what the photo is of.

So far, you could download and use this app on your smartphone to recognize various items.

Google Photos on the Web Gets a Lens Feature

Google recently integrated Lens with the Google Photos smartphone app, and it's now integrating the service with Google Photos on the web. Initially, there's only one Lens feature you can use and it's for recognizing and copying text from your photos.

As first spotted by 9to5Google, you can now quickly copy text from your photos hosted on Google Photos using this newly integrated feature. You just need to select a photo with some words and the feature will show up.

To use this newly introduced feature, you need to access Google Photos using your preferred browser on your computer. Then, with a compatible image, you'll see the OCR (optical character recognition) feature of Google Lens.

If you aren't sure how that works, the following should help you:

  1. Open your browser and head over to the Google Photos site. Log in to your account.
  2. Click a photo that has some clearly visible text on it.
  3. When the photo opens in full-screen, you'll see an option named Copy text from image at the top. Click this option to use Lens' OCR feature.
  4. The feature copies all the text from the photo and shows the text on the right. Click the Copy text button to quickly copy the selected text to your clipboard.

As you may already know, the ability to recognize text in images is one of many features of Google Lens. This is Google's first step towards making Lens fully available on Google Photos for the web, and more features are likely on the way.
