Google will be releasing a new line of its Nest security cameras at some point this year.

There's no official announcement as yet, but a recent statement about the discontinued Nest Cam IQ teased the upgrade.

Goodbye IQ, Hello New Nest Crew

The new information came along with the confirmation that the Nest Cam IQ is being discontinued. After noticing the camera had been out of stock for some time, 9to5google.com reached out and received a statement in return teasing the new lineup:

Nest will keep investing in new innovations [including a] new lineup of security cameras for 2021

There are no further details so far, but the pattern of teasing new products before discontinuing old ones is exactly what happened with Google's Pixel line last year.

As for the Nest Cam IQ, current owners of the AI-powered smart camera can expect "ongoing feature support, software fixes, and critical security updates" still, but there's no telling for exactly how long.

More Changes to Nest Incoming

The new line of cameras from Nest will likely be the first in a line of updates for Google's smart home fleet this year. A recent FCC filing shows that Google is most likely working on a new Nest Hub.

While there's no information to go on yet, it seems likely that the inevitable march of "AI in everything" will make its way into the whole line of Nest cameras and that the specific timing of retiring the Nest Cam IQ is no coincidence.
