You can now use Google Chrome to access any web passwords that you've saved through the Safari browser and synced across your Apple devices via iCloud Keychain.

Apple's officially released an extension for Google's Chrome browser which lets you access the same strong Safari passwords created on your Apple device, with Chrome on Windows.

With it, you can also generate strong passwords for logging in to websites in Chrome for Windows. Chrome will offer to create a strong password when you’re prompted for a login.

And passwords that you create in Chrome for Windows will seamlessly upload to your iCloud Keychain. From there, your newly added passwords get automatically pushed to all your Apple devices that are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID account.

Easier Jumping Between Mac and Windows

As The Verge points out, the extension was prematurely revealed via a recent update to Apple's official iCloud software. The update promised "Support for iCloud Passwords Chrome Extension" despite said extension being unavailable at the time.

This is a helpful release not only for people who regularly switch between the Safari and Chrome browsers on their Mac but also for those who jump between the macOS and Windows platforms frequently. That's especially the case if you happen to use a third-party password manager, like 1Password or LastPass, that integrates with your iCloud Keychain.

How to Get iCloud Passwords for Chrome

The iCloud Passwords extension can be downloaded free of charge by visiting Google's Chrome Web Store with the Chrome browser on a Mac or Windows computer.

Here's how Apple describes the new extension:

iCloud Passwords is a Chrome extension for Windows users that allows you to use the same strong Safari passwords you create on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac when visiting websites in Chrome on your Windows PC. iCloud Passwords also saves any new passwords you create in Chrome to your iCloud Keychain so that it is also available on your Apple devices.

According to a support document on Apple's website, you must enable two-factor authentication with your Apple ID and own a device running iOS 14 or later to use the extension. Apple also provides a dedicated app for accessing iCloud on Windows.

Other iCloud Apps for Windows

Apple's official iCloud for Windows software, for instance, sits in the tray and offers quick access to your iCloud photos, videos, files, and other important information on a PC.

It's available to download for free in the Microsoft Store.

The software makes it easy to set up your iCloud mail, contacts, and calendars in Windows clients such as Outlook. Apple also makes it easy to access your images, mail, photos, and other items on any computer with a web browser through a dedicated iCloud web app.
