I want to create music CDs for gifts. May or may not be played a lot, but want good quality sound and good quality scribing. I've read HP is bad, but don't know about others.

I have only used LG drives and never had a problem on any of my machines. As regards to disks, as Oron said, just use good quality disks.

I've used a wide variety of CD & DVD writers over the years and have never noticed any difference in the quality of recording of any discs (as long as the blanks were of good quality of course). The HP drives were perhaps less reliable than others in terms of the drive itself (that is, two of them broke), but the recording was just fine. In short, the only thing I would suggest is to use good quality blanks.
