I would like a good photo editing piece of software. A free download that's easy to install. I have computer classes for senior adults and I would like something they could install at home and use easily.

IrfanView is great for single images. If I need to make a composite image by assembling multiple individual images and adding some text and graphics, I use PowerPoint. For screenshots, a Google Chrome Extension called "Screen Capture" is great - it allows you to take screenshots of not only the visible area but full screens and user-defined regions.

I like Serif PhotoPlus Starter Edition. It has some limitations, but it's ease to use and shares the interface with their other free products I use.

I use Photoshop for big jobs, but for quickies, FastStone does many of the same things, with a similar system of keyboard shortcuts. Some things it actually does better than Photoshop.http://www.faststone.org/

I like Irfan myself. Haven't checked out the latest version of it for a year or two, but it does everything I need to do, fast, easy to load, and free. Helps if you know something about using real photo digital editing tools (like photoshop), but definitely not necessary.

What is your definition of editing? If you want to teach your class the very basics, i.e. simple things like cutting, re-sizing, and maybe rotating an image, then I would definitely recommend
Irfan View
. Irfan View can also handle some advanced tasks, such as adding text, batch-processing, or creating slideshows. But for a beginner it's a great tool because it's very easy to use.

Hi Tiina, How right you are! I only wander why more people dont use Irfan View.It is powerful enough for everyday editing and actually pretty simple to use - also for Senior Citizens in question!

Google Picasa is a good basic photo editor that is great for organizing photos. GIMP is very good, very powerful, but much more of a learning curve. Both are cross platform.

For simple edits I suggest using Google Picasa as well. For some advanced editing you would need Photoshop. Photoshop is pricey and requires time before you can with it comfortably. (MakeUseOf published a couple of beginner howto guides for Photoshop. Find them here, http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download )

What OS are we talking about: Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, etc.? Photo editing is not nearly as simple as you seem to think; it takes practice and skill, and you can't get either of those overnight. If you want something free, then Gimp is what you're looking for. It's very similar to Adobe Photoshop in terms of features, but the interface is different, and it requires the X11 environment on Mac OS X.Gimp for Mac OS X: http://www.gimp.org/downloads/Gimp for Windows: http://www.gimp.org/windows/
