Gmail is the most popular email service in the world. It's fast, reliable, and of course, free. Google's email platform also offers several additional features that enhance its functionality. It allows you to easily link your accounts together, or create an alias to protect your privacy.

An email alias is simply a secondary email account. In most cases, it can be a variation of your existing email, or you could create a whole other alias to protect yourself from spam.

Here's how you can add email aliases to Gmail, and send emails from a different email address.

How to Create an Email Alias Using Gmail

You can create an email alias directly in Gmail. Here's what to do:

1. Add Another Email Address

To add an email alias, first open your Gmail account. Then, click on Settings, and then select See all settings. From there, just select the Accounts and Import tab.

Then, click on Add another email address, which is visible in the Send email as setting. A popup window will appear, where you can add your name and email address.

Your email alias doesn't necessarily have to be another Gmail account. It can be any other account as well, such as Outlook or Yandex.

Just tick Treat as an alias and then click on Next Step.

2. Confirm the Address

You will then receive a verification email at the email address you provided. That email will contain a confirmation code and a confirmation link. You must click on the link to verify your new email.

Then, you'll have to add the provided confirmation code to complete the process.

3. Change Which Account the Email Is Sent From

Now, when you open the window to write a new email, you'll see the From address appear. Just click on the From line to change it to whichever address you want to send the email from.

How to Create Temporary Aliases in Gmail

Gmail also lets you create temporary aliases. This lets you receive emails from different sources and automatically filters them into separate folders.

1. Amend Your Email With a Plus

When signing up for a newsletter or giving your email online, you can simply add a "+" sign after your email with some extra text. So, emails sent to "johndoe@gmail.com" and "johndoe+xyznews@gmail.com" will both end up in the same inbox.

2. Create a Filter

To create a filter, start by clicking the slider icon on the far-right of your Gmail's search bar. Then, simply type the temporary alias address that you created in the To field, and then click on Create filter.

You can then select whichever category you want the emails to drop into, such as Social or Promotions.

How to Add an Alias Email in Google Workspace

For organizations that use Google Workspace, adding an alternate email address is a great way to receive additional mail on their primary address. There's no reason to pay an additional amount for another Workspace account.

Email aliases are ideal for smaller businesses, and they help businesses appear more professional. For instance, you can create an email alias for "finance@organization.com" and receive all emails sent to that address on your actual Google Workspace email.

1. Access the Google Admin Console

Your first step is to access the Google Admin Console from your admin account in Google Workspace.

From the admin Console, simply click on Alternate email addresses (email alias). You will have to add the username for the email that you want to create an alias for.

Select one from the drop-down menu, and you can then create an alternate email address.

You can create up to 30 alternate email addresses without any additional expense.

Use Gmail to Send Better Emails

Email aliases is just one example of what Gmail can do. Keeping you safe and secure online, email aliases are a great way to protect your email address. But that's not all Gmail offers.

For instance, Gmail also lets you send voice messages now. If you don't want to write an email, this is a great way to quickly get your message across.
