A good provider of SMS Updates in Australia is http://www.smsupdates.com.au.They do charge around 50c a message but I have found them to be reliable and still quite cheap.

Just a note: Be careful when you sign up for these alerts. Many places will advertise "free SMS alerts" but there is a fine print dictating a subscription, which is generally ridiculously high. Thoroughly check the web pages of any subscription service you sign up to for alerts, including the Terms and Conditions. Also be aware that unsubscribing from the alerts can be a hassle. This is most often done through another shortcode, and may not in fact work. The key is to be careful. If you make a mistake, you will likely only realize it when you get your next bill, and by then the charges can be quite high.

I use all of these (though I think they might only work for US residents):
Chacha thmbsavrs
(ad-supported) for SMS alerts on jokes, weather forecasts, etc;
AOL Alerts
and
Windows Live Alerts
for score and RSS SMS updates (so you could get the feed from any cricket scores sites).

There are lots of websites that send you free SMS alerts but I think http://www.4info.com/ is the best one. Hope it helps :D

You could also subscribe to a number of websites you're interested in (that may not offer SMS updates, but do offer email updates), and then have Gmail send you an SMS alert with the update - see Aibek's article: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-setup-free-sms-alerts-for-urgent-emails-in-gmail/

There are a lot of websites that offer the kind of facilities you desire. However, if you really want a realiable source, you could try using Google SMS Channels. This site truly has a large repository of different groups to which you can subscribe in order to receive text alerts on a multitude of topics. The link is below:http://labs.google.co.in/smschannels/browseAlso, in case you use Google SMS, you could send a keyword to the Google SMS number (in India, it is 97733 00000). So suppose you send the keyword, Cricket. Google will send you the latest cricket updates, to which you can reply with "ON" to get one week's worth of free updates.Hope this helps. Enjoy texting.
