Softmaker FreeOffice is the best. I asume it is even better than MS Office. It is lighter, faster, and consumes very little resources, not to mention it has "human" menus. With MS Office 2010 and newer, I can't find anything in the menus, it is all so complicated and hidden away...For personal use, and if you are not connected in an Exchange Enterprise... or similar ... network, you should not bother with MS Office, try Softmaker FreeOffice, it is simpler, faster and familiar.

Lotus Symphony was a great alternative. Unfortunately IBM stopped development but you can still find copies on the net. LibreOffice is an excellent alternative too but I have had problems with it crashing while accessing very large spreadsheet files (~45MB).

I'm not sure. I believe IBM used the name "Lotus" to connect it to Lotus 1-2-3 and their other office programs.

http://loadandhelp.com/home-en.htmlSoftmaker FreeOffice, currently on a Christmas "loadandhelp" where they make a donation for every download. The question is how 2013 free compares with the longstanding freebie offer on 2010 Ashampoo/softmaker.There is also the one you don't hear of so much:http://www.ssuitesoft.com/officesuites.htm - SSuite has a rather confusing array of versions, with different components and screen size requirements.

If you are just looking for an alternative to MS Word, try AbiWord: http://www.abisource.com/. AbiWord is similar to MS Word in look and feel, and opens fairly quickly. This is one of the better word processing software I have used, aside from MS Word. The other above suggested office suites work nicely, but I recommend Kingsoft over much of the other suggested.

i personally prefer Kingsoft office . libreoffice also a good choice. if you do use macro function in office, i would recommend you to go for libreoffice, kingsoft office does not support macro! on the hand you can have same(almost same) look(ribbon style) and feel in kingsoft office, like MS office! Kingsoft office and Libreoffice both avilable windows and linux(including ours cute ubuntu) system !link Kingsoft Office: http://www.kingsoftstore.com/Libreoffice : http://www.libreoffice.org/

There are plenty, and it depends what you mean by "alternatives", but the best pruducts I know, which come close to MS Word in functionality are Libre Office and Kingsoft Office Free (the non-free version of Kingsoft's application is even better, but, well, it's not free!).

"docx" signifies Microsofts new Office Open XML format. It is more likely a third-party application can properly handle the open format than the proprietary old docs. When saving documents most of them support saving to Office Open XML. Saving documents in the old proprietary '.doc' format is actually done by encoding it as Rich Text and changing the file extension to '.doc'. Those are not properly encoded '.doc' files.
