I know a bit about computers but I don't know how to format any computer if required. Therefore it would very kind of you if you would explain the process in some detail.

Thanks in advance.

For those who have Macs, you can simply use Disk Utility installed on every Mac.

Hello, you can accomplish formatting by different means.  If you are formatting a drive to install an operating system, the only thing you need is the operating system installation CD/DVD.  If that is the case, you just need to change startup in BIOS to CD/DVD, insert CD/DVD in tray and then restart system.  If you are just formatting a drive, most times and depending on operating system, you can use the disk management tools provided with the system to format a drive.  You can also use third party tools like gparted to format a drive.  You can either download the image and burn it disc from the next link:http://gparted.sourceforge.net/Or, you could get your hands in a linux live disc/USB and use it from there.  Here is a linux image that already has tools like gparted included:http://www.ubuntu.com/downloadNow if you want to nuke a drive, you can use tools like Darik's Boot and Nuke:http://www.dban.org/

Gopal, it would probably be a good idea if you tell us WHY you want to format the disc. What are you actually trying to acheive? Formatting for reinstallation is one thing, and formatting to erase the disc so you can get rid of the PC is quite another.
