Is the Speech Services by Google app for Android stuck when downloading an English (US) or English (UK) update?

Usually, it happens when you aren't connected to Wi-Fi but have set your phone to complete updates only on a Wi-Fi network. Other possible causes of this error may include an outdated operating system, insufficient storage space, a corrupt app cache, or corrupt installation.

If you are also frustrated by this update stuck notification, we will provide you with seven solutions in this article to help you identify the root cause and fix it.

Preliminary Checks

Before you roll up your sleeves and implement major fixes, perform the following checks:

  1. Make sure you're connected to the internet.
  2. Restart your phone if the download has got stuck for the first time.
  3. Ensure your Android device runs an up-to-date version of the operating system; see if you can update your device if it's outdated.
  4. Make sure your device has enough storage space. If it's low, it's time to free up some storage space.
  5. If you are currently connected to a VPN, turn it off. If you aren't connected to a VPN, we recommend turning it on to see if disabling or enabling it fixes the problem.

If none of that solves the problem, you can try some of these more specific solutions.

Does the Issue Only Affect the Speech Services by Google App?

Ensure that the app update is stuck only for Speech Services by Google and not all other apps on your phone. To confirm this, observe whether updates of other apps are also stuck and update notifications frequently appear concurrently with Speech Services by Google.

If the problem persists across other apps, too, it might be a device-level issue. Therefore, it is advisable to selectively try the device-level fixes listed below before moving on to others. If the issue is only affecting Speech Services by Google, implement all the fixes listed below one by one.

1. Switch Your Network Connection

The Google Play Store allows users to set their network preferences so that apps are only updated when connected to Wi-Fi rather than connected to a network with a data cap. Even though it's a handy way to save data, your apps won't update unless you connect to Wi-Fi again.

To rule out this possibility, you can switch to a Wi-Fi connection or set the Google Play Store to auto-update apps on any network. Follow these steps to change the network preference:

  1. Go to the Google Play Store, tap on the profile icon in the top-right corner, and select Settings.
  2. Go to Network preferences > Auto-update apps.
  3. Select Over any network.

Check if this switch completes the pending Speech Services by Google's update. If not, move on to the next fix.

2. Set Offline Speech Recognition to Update at Any Time

For the same reason we have configured the Google Play Store to update the app over any network, you should also automatically set Offline Speech Recognition to update languages over any network. To configure that, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings on your phone.
  2. Tap on Google.
  3. Go to Settings for Google apps.
  4. Tap on Search, Assistant and Voice.
  5. Go to Voice.
  6. Tap on Offline speech recognition.
  7. Go to the Auto-Update tab.
  8. Check the circle for Auto-update languages at any time.

3. Cancel the Stuck Update Then Update Manually

If switching the network doesn't work, and the update is still stuck, try updating Speech Services by Google manually. Before you do that, cancel the current update and disable the automatic update first. The steps are as follows:

  1. Visit the Speech Services by Google page on the Play Store on your phone.
  2. To cancel a stuck update, tap the Cancel button.
  3. In the top-right corner, tap on three vertical dots and uncheck Enable auto update.
  4. Then tap the Update button.

If the download process gets stuck again in the middle, move on to the next solution.

4. Clear the Cache of Speech Services by Google App

Often, the piled-up cached data interferes with the app's performance. It might also be responsible for preventing the new update from downloading correctly. You need to clear the app's cache to rule out this possibility. Here's how:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Locate and tap on the Speech Services by Google app.
  3. Tap on Storage then select Clear cache.

If clearing the cache doesn't fix the issue, continue implementing the remaining fixes.

5. Select the Right Language and Region in Your Settings

For Speech Services by Google to work correctly, you must match the region of your phone to your actual location. In other words, you can't select the UK as your region if you are in the US.

To ensure the right region has been selected or select the correct one if it hasn't, follow the below steps:

  1. Go to Settings on your phone.
  2. Tap on Google.
  3. Go to Settings for Google apps.
  4. Tap on Search, Assistant and Voice.
  5. Select Language and region.
  6. Tap on Search region and select the same region where you are currently located.
  7. Now go to Search language and select the language of the same region.
  8. Restart your phone and see if the stuck update notification has disappeared.

If changing the region and language doesn't resolve the issue, move on to the next step.

6. Uninstall and Reinstall the Language

If the Speech Services by Google app's update is still stuck, you should uninstall the language the app is stuck with and reinstall it. You can do this by following these steps:

  1. Go to Settings on your phone and select Google.
  2. Go to Settings for Google apps.
  3. Tap on Search, Assistant and Voice.
  4. Go to Voice.
  5. Tap on Offline speech recognition.
  6. Go to the Installed tab, tap on the installed language, and hit Uninstall.
  7. Go to the All tab, tap on the same language again, then tap on Download.

If reinstalling the language doesn't help, move on to the next fix.

7. Factory Reset Speech Services by Google

If none of the fixes have worked for you, you should factory reset the Speech Services by Google app. After factory resetting, you'll likely fix all issues since it will uninstall all installed updates.

However, keep in mind that factory resetting the Speech Services by Google app may lose some of your customizations and data. If you don't care about that, follow the below steps to factory reset the app:

  1. Open the Settings app and tap on Apps.
  2. Locate and tap on the Speech Services by Google app.
  3. Tap on three vertical dots and select Uninstall updates.

If All Else Fails, Just Disable the Notification

Hopefully, following the fixes in the article will help you successfully update Speech Services by Google. If all else fails, you can disable app notifications to hide the stuck update notification.

However, you should remember that disabling notifications will not fix the actual problem. Instead, the update will continue to run in the background and consume your resources. Nevertheless, it's an excellent way to get rid of that annoying notification.
