Whenever I am downloading something, I tend to get this "Server not found" message on trying to open webpages. The pages are there, as if I pause the download, they load correctly. If I try to refresh several times, they may eventually open even with a download running, but I figure there must be a way to force Firefox to keep trying. Does anyone have a solution? I'm running Windows 7 64-bit Home Edition and a portable Firefox v6.

Hey Mango,Do you experience same problem with the non-portable Firefox version or other browserers like Chrome or Opera. I suspect in your case issues might be caused by a conflick of one of the existing apps (probably a security software) with the portable version of Firefox. An easy way to check this before invetigating further would be to try non-portable version. if that turns out to be the case then you can try adding Firefox portable executable to the exceptions list in your security toolslike Firewall and Antivirus.

Well then can be some problems of your laptop like hardware related?uncheck checkbox 'Use hardware acceleration when available' in Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General.Softperfect ram diskhttp://www.softperfect.com/products/ramdisk/Firefox Preloaderhttps://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firefox-preloader/http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffpreloader/Firefox Preloader that launches when windows starts up and sits in your system tray. It keeps certain elements of Firefox always preloaded, so that the browser takes an amazingly shorter time to open when you launch it. firefox slow on your netbook too disable ipv6

hi ha14,if it is only a constraint of the browser, then why does it work fine if i plug the browser into a different laptop, connected to the same home network, with the same download running?I already tweaked the javascript time limit.. besides, it is not really related to the problem at hand, which is about firefox not loading pages at all (normally it takes about 1 or 2 seconds before i get the "page not found" error.)..what is ram disk soft?kind regards, mango.

ok.. 2 things.. firstly i just noticed that my last post got rendered very wrong.. if you copy and paste the text above into the user.js file, it wont work, as the newlines have been removed. each line ends in a ";" (see http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,10831712~mode=flat)2ndly, it seems i spoke too soon. for a while it worked fine, but now i find that pages are again not loading. i am quite baffled and annoyed by this. As i've mentioned, if i run this version of firefox on another laptop with the same download running, every page gets loaded. here on this one, it is sporadic at best.

hi again.. i think i have finally fixed the problem.. i created a user.js file in my firefox profile, and added the following lines of code:// Turn on timer-based reflow managementuser_pref("content.notify.ontimer", true);// Sets the allowed time between reflows in microsecondsuser_pref("content.notify.interval", 750000);user_pref("content.interrupt.parsing", true);user_pref("content.max.tokenizing.time", 2250000);user_pref("content.maxtextrun", 8191);user_pref("content.switch.threshold", 750000);// Set the number of reflows to do before waiting for the rest of the page to arriveuser_pref("content.notify.backoffcount", 5);// Turn initial paint delay touser_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 500);// Set Maximum Connections Per Serveruser_pref("network.http.max-connections", 48);user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", 16);user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy",16);user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 8);i restarted firefox, started a download, and pressed refresh on a few of the pages already in tabs, and so far they have all restarted ok.. maybe i'm speaking too soon, but it certainly seems to be working better now.yes.. after further testing, i believe i am quite happy with this solution.

hi.. i appreciate the answers, but so far, nothing works consistently for me. i have played around so much with about:config following the tips given here, but none of them seem to do the trick 100% of the time. the strange thing is, that i am using firefox portable on a new laptop i've bought. now on the old laptop, i never once had this problem, if i downloaded something, firefox response time slowed down some, understandably, but I never got the persistent time outs that i am now getting. the portable firefox i am now using, is exactly the same as the one i was using previously.. this indicates to me that the problem lies not within the firefox settings, but somewhere outside of them. so any further suggestions at all?

hi ha14,thanks for the links.. the low quality flash addon is not compatible with the current firefox version, and besides it's unlikely it would help get my webpages loaded. the tweak addon, i've installed, and although i've played around with the settings, I can't seem to configure it so my pages load when downloads are in progress.. (if anyone knows ideal settings for it for this issue, would be very helpful!), the last link you provide does not appear to be too relevant to the issue. So far, I am not having much luck with the techradar 8 hacks link either.. although i've followed the instructions there, i'm still finding pages wont load with downloads running. On my old laptop, this was never an issue.. any further ideas?
