Instead, I was looking for something really simple, minimalist, and perhaps similar in appearance and functionality to Google Reader. And something that just worked. I'm afraid I'm rather picky about what web apps and software I will continue using.

Now that Google Reader is but a distant memory, the fight for the future of RSS is truly on. One of the most notable products fighting the good fight is Feedly. Google Reader wasn't an app or an add-on: It lived purely on the Web, so today I'll be looking at Feedly Cloud, a browser-based RSS reader that requires no external tools to use. We first reported about it as it went live on June 19, but now's the time to take a good, long look at it.

We've reviewed Feedly's Firefox add-on, and even its iOS app way back in 2011.

One such beta software comes from a surprising source: America Online, or AOL.

Since the news first broke, several new RSS readers have surfaced online and many of them have really taken advantage of Google Reader's shutdown. Leaving behind Google Reader isn't so hard when moving on to the next service is as simple as a few keys and clicks. CommaFeed and Reedah are two services that have come up since then that offer to do just that.

Google Reader was my web-based RSS reader of choice and it still shocks me that they've come to the decision to part ways with it, but we've got to accept it and adjust.

Reading the feeds we subscribe to is a pretty basic day-to-day activity, and you can bet there are enough Chrome extensions for that.

Google Reader works and lead the way in RSS feed readers for a long time, but it's boringly simple, even for Google design ethics. These readers add new dimensions! They add new ways to physically interact with your news. They grow with you and if life does anything, it grows. So, prepare to breathe new life into the way you use news!

It is ironic that a web service which dominates the world with an austere, barebones interface has a few allied services which are cluttered. In my opinion, Gmail and Google Reader are not very cluttered. Is it because we have learnt to live with them? Whatever might be your opinion, it is also true that they can be made simpler and easier on the eyes.

In art, architecture, lifestyles, and of course in web design. Minimalism is a movement and though one can say it is about simplicity, it may not be entirely true. It is about getting to the essence of something by removing the non-essentials. So, when one talks about Gmail and Google Reader, the non-essentials have a long list of their own.

Feedly with its attractive UI and host of other features is probably that. Let's take a closer look.

Google Reader is free, offers unlimited features and is very flexible. It also has a very powerful search platform that makes it easy to explore your feed archives. You may have dozens (or maybe even hundreds) of feeds on your list - and browsing through them daily or weekly can take plenty of time. This post aims at making that procedure faster, which will hopefully increase your productivity and let you spend more time actually reading.

RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication, got its start in 1999 under the direction of Dave Winer for his Scripting News website.
