Getting an RSS feed for an RSS-less site <em>sucks</em>. That's because the majority of feed creating services rely on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler" target="_blank"><em>web crawlers</em></a> or<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_scraping" target="_blank"><em> web scrapers</em></a>. Web crawlers/scrapers vary in quality. Some function on specific kinds of sites but not others. Of the many kinds of products out there, Kimono [No Longer Available] offers the most amount of versatility but with a fair amount of complexity, relative to services like <a href="http://page2rss.com/" target="_blank">Page2RSS</a>.</p>

Of course, people have been announcing <a title="4 Things That Really Annoy Me In Tech Today [Opinion]" href="https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-annoy-tech-today-opinion/">the death of RSS</a> pretty much since it came into existence, but when Google Reader bit the dust on July 1st, 2013, many were ready to place a wreath at the headstone and walk away.</p>

In truth, Facebook and Google+ don't deliver true news. Social media content arrives late and at random; it's not tailored to your needs and lacks organization. Many denizens of Facebook don't know that a better technology exists that absolutely <em>thrashes</em> social media in efficiency, organization and utility. Just three simple words can change the way you use and consume information – <em>forever</em>: Really Simple Syndication, or RSS.</p>

At its height, Digg was a major traffic driver for websites before Twitter and Facebook went mainstream. Sites <em>wanted</em> to be featured on the Digg front page because it resulted in a traffic explosion known as the 'Digg Effect.' Last year, MakeUseOf's Dave Parrack took a look at <a href="https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/discover-web-digg-v1/">the big Digg revamp</a>, as the site has attempted to regain its former glory.</p>

But once we were past the initial gnashing and wailing of teeth, we began to search for replacements. A lot of my colleagues swear by Feedly or Digg, but I never really melded with either of them. Instead, I was looking for something really simple, minimalist, and perhaps similar in appearance and functionality to Google Reader. And something <em>that just worked</em>. I'm afraid I'm rather picky about what web apps and software I will continue using.</p>

But what happens if your chosen service decides to call it quits? Or what happens if their servers go down? The only 100% reliable way to not have your hopes and dreams crushed by another RSS service is to host your own. That's where Sismics Reader comes in, an open source, free alternative to Google Reader that allows you to host the service on your PC, Mac, or Linux-based machine.

Now that Google Reader is but a distant memory, the fight for the future of RSS is truly on. One of the most notable products fighting the good fight is Feedly. Google Reader wasn't an app or an add-on: It lived purely on the Web, so today I'll be looking at Feedly Cloud, a browser-based RSS reader that requires no external tools to use. We first reported about it as it went live on June 19, but now's the time to take a good, long look at it.

We've reviewed Feedly's Firefox add-on, and even its <a href="https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/feedly-mobile-news-google-reader-feeds-stylish-app-ios-android/">iOS app</a> way back in 2011.</p>

Many alternatives have been suggested, and Feedly seems to be one of the most popular options to have benefited from Google's decision. That said, there is another service which recently launched its public beta and might be worth giving a spin. Noowit is not a traditional RSS reader by any means.

Looking for a more practical, everyday use for my growing collection of Google spreadsheets, I decided to see if I could use one function I haven't covered here at MUO yet called &quot;ImportFeed&quot;, to try and develop a personal DIY feeder reader that I could actually make use of every day - rather than installing some desktop application, or visiting some online feed reader service.

Like many technologies and devices, I took my good old time getting around to giving it the old college try. Well, a few months ago I finally pulled myself away from my beloved <a href="https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/use-excel-and-google-tasks-to-create-the-best-goals-management-tool-ever/">Excel</a>, and decided to see what sorts of things I could accomplish with Google Spreadsheet. To say that I was surprised would be an understatement. I was floored.</p>

Since the news first broke, several new RSS readers have surfaced online and many of them have really taken advantage of Google Reader's shutdown. Leaving behind Google Reader isn't so hard when moving on to the next service is as simple as a few keys and clicks. CommaFeed and Reedah are two services that have come up since then that offer to do just that.

Reading the feeds we subscribe to is a pretty basic day-to-day activity, and you can bet there are enough Chrome extensions for that.

The chances of Google culling other services in the future are high, as the company has these spring cleans regularly.

This decision annoyed many people, some of whom immediately began looking around for <a href="https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-readers-end-is-nigh-prepare-with-these-alternative-rss-readers/">alternative RSS readers</a>. The chances of Google culling other services in the future are high, as the company has these spring cleans regularly.</p>

Google Reader works and lead the way in RSS feed readers for a long time, but it's boringly simple, even for Google design ethics. These readers add new dimensions! They add new ways to physically interact with your news. They grow with you and if life does anything, it grows. So, prepare to breathe new life into the way you use news!

Byline is what I would consider to be a meta-reader. It takes your feeds from Google Reader (as well as Instapaper and Pocket), and converts each title to be readable on your iPhone. Of course, there are other apps that do the same thing, so in this case, it's all about your flavor of choice. With that said, take a look at Byline, and see if you like it.

For me, RSS feeds are the ideal way to keep up to date with all the websites I'm interested in - a centralised news-pool, so you don't have to check your browser every five minutes just to stay on top of the news. Google Reader does a great job organizing your RSS feeds, and Reeder wonderfully integrates Google Reader on your Mac. There's no shortage of ways to access those RSS feeds, but part of the problem remains.

While I have no bad words to say about any of these options, they might be a bit extravagant and over the top to some.</p>

For blogs, which are still on a popularity rise, RSS is one of the best ways to aggregate news updates. For web-based RSS aggregation, my go-to site is Google Reader. But just as some people prefer to use Outlook and Thunderbird instead of Gmail’s web interface, it may please you to use a desktop client instead of a web-based solution. For that, Omea Reader is one of the best on Windows.

There are several options to choose from, with varying degrees of difficulty to use, risk and stability. The choice is yours!

Does your participation in new social networks depend on whether you can share that information with more than just the people within that network? Since Google+ doesn't offer the RSS feeds themselves, some of us are always hunting for ways to get the information out.</p>

You've got to keep up with trends and you've got to be on the ball or you might miss out on opportunities, excitement, or (in my case) money. Feed Notifier does a fantastic job of delivering RSS notifications more effectively than any software I've used. It doesn't matter if you're an entrepreneur or just someone who likes to keep up to date with the news.

When I first went looking for a suitable news and RSS reader for my iPhone, I had two prerequisites – no price tag (the feeds are free, after all) and Google Reader integration. Feedly with its attractive UI and host of other features is probably that. Let's take a closer look.

Google Reader is free, offers unlimited features and is very flexible. It also has a very powerful search platform that makes it easy to explore your feed archives. You may have dozens (or maybe even hundreds) of feeds on your list - and browsing through them daily or weekly can take plenty of time. This post aims at making that procedure faster, which will hopefully increase your productivity and let you spend more time actually reading.

Whether it's on a blog, a news site, a social network or a podcast, it doesn't appear that there is anything that can't be converted into an RSS feed of some kind these days. The delivery of the content is one thing, but how users will receive it is what is important to us and to our readers.</p>

Anyone spending considerable amount of time on the web can greatly benefit from them. So, to cut to the chase, I will talk about <em>FeedReader</em>, still relatively new and widely unknown to mainstream internet users.</p>
