The Apple Watch has been a massive success for Apple. It's currently the most popular watch in the world. So far, Apple has released a new Apple Watch model every year since its original introduction. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that we're expecting a new one very soon.

The Apple Watch Series 7 is all set to replace the current Apple Watch Series 6 in the coming months, but how can Apple improve something that's already near-perfect? Well, here are the top seven features we'd love to see in the Apple Watch Series 7.

1. A New Design

The Apple Watch looks great as it is, but the design has mostly remained the same since its original release in 2015. Sure, the screen got slightly bigger, and the bezels shrunk down, but it's still the same old square-shaped smartwatch that everyone's familiar with. Hence, we feel the next iteration of the Apple Watch should bring about a radical design change.

We're confident that many people would love to see a circular Apple Watch, but that seems quite unlikely considering how watchOS would need to be reworked to fit the screen. However, a flat design similar to the iPhone 12 or the iPad Pro would also be really nice for a change. The Apple Watch Series 7 must have a fresh look to sell like hotcakes.

2. More Storage and RAM

Apple hasn't changed anything in the last couple of years when it comes to storage. The Apple Watch Series 5 and the Apple Watch Series 6 models pack 32GB of storage. Sure, a smartwatch doesn't need a ton of storage like a smartphone, but someone who stores photos or music locally on the Apple Watch would certainly appreciate a bump in this department.

RAM has been unchanged since the Apple Watch Series 4, and it's prime time for an upgrade. Apple could easily double the RAM in the Apple Watch Series 7 to ensure it handles multitasking without ever slowing down. These days, 1GB of RAM isn't quite good enough, even for a smartwatch's standards.

3. A Quad-Core Processor

Except for the original Apple Watch, every other model has used a dual-core processor for its operation. So far, the processor has been capable, but we think it's time for a major change in the CPU department. Of course, the current Apple S6 chip in the Apple Watch Series 6 is good enough for the next few years, but rather than bumping up the clock speeds, we'd like Apple to add more cores.

More cores will allow it to perform exceptionally well, especially when you're dealing with multiple apps on your Apple Watch. After all, who doesn't want a faster, smoother Apple Watch?

4. The Apple Watch Series 7 Should Support 5G

To be fair, the Apple Watch Series 7 doesn't need 5G support, but it's certainly a nice feature to have, especially if you plan to use it long-term. Considering Apple brought 5G to its other products, like the iPhone 12 and the M1 iPad Pros, we feel it's safe to expect 5G support on the next Apple Watch.

Theoretically, a 5G connection could give you download speeds of up to 3.5Gbps under ideal conditions, but you should expect nothing close to this number in practical use cases. In real-world scenarios, you can still expect twice the speed of a 4G LTE connection, though. 5G support may be overkill, but it certainly will make the Apple Watch Series 7 a future-proof smartwatch.

5. Blood Glucose Monitoring

Apple Watch sensors on the back

With the last few generations of Apple Watch, Apple introduced two new health-oriented features: blood oxygen measurement and a dedicated ECG app. Blood oxygen measurement, in particular, proved to be quite helpful in detecting COVID-19 symptoms early on. This time around, we want Apple to shift its focus to blood glucose monitoring.

Millions of people across the globe suffer from diabetes today, and a non-invasive way to measure blood glucose levels can be a game-changer. At the moment, you'd typically have to prick your fingers and draw blood for an accurate measurement. WE're hoping the Apple Watch Series 7's sensors will introduce a surface-based monitoring solution that doesn't require any blood at all.

Besides a blood glucose monitor, we'd love to see a body temperature sensor in the Apple Watch Series 7 to eliminate the need for a thermometer for a quick temperature check. In fact, this should be far easier to implement than a blood glucose monitor, but we'll see how Apple plays this out.

6. Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6 Support

Did you know that the Apple Watch Series 6 doesn't even support 802.11ac Wi-Fi? It seriously lacks in the Wi-Fi department considering that even the iPhone 11, which came out the previous year, supports Wi-Fi 6. Sure, Wi-Fi speed isn't a top priority on a smartwatch, but we want the Apple Watch Series 7 to support today's wireless standards.

Bluetooth 5.2 support is yet another feature we'd love to see. This Bluetooth standard introduces support for LE (low energy) audio, which basically means high-quality audio at lower data rates.

7. Better Battery Life

Battery life is one particular area where smartwatches like the Apple Watch have a lot of room to improve. The current Apple Watch Series 6 is rated for 18 hours of mixed usage, which is fairly decent for a device with an always-on display. However, you only get a maximum of 1.5 hours of talk time when connected to LTE.

We feel Apple can improve the battery life by adding a slightly bigger battery or improving the efficiency of the processor that powers the Apple Watch. Ideally, we'd like to see 24-hour battery life with the Apple Watch Series 7, with double the talk time of the previous generation.

The Apple Watch Series 7 Should Bring Major Changes

The Apple Watch has received incremental upgrades over the years, but it's time we see a noticeable upgrade this time around. A fresh new look is at the top of our list, followed by other hardware-related changes. If Apple manages to add at least half of the features we listed here, the Apple Watch Series 7 would easily be worth upgrading to.
