Facebook News launched in the US in June 2020, and the feature will soon be available in more countries. Germany, France, India, Brazil, and the UK will likely be the next countries to gain access to Facebook News.

Facebook News Expands Its Reach

Facebook News is still a relatively new feature for Facebook users in the US, and Facebook is now considering bringing the feature to several other countries.

If you've never used Facebook News before, it's a personalized news feed from thousands of different news outlets. Currently, you can only access Facebook News from the Facebook app on Android or iOS.

In an About Facebook post, Facebook announced that it has made ample progress with the US adaption of Facebook News. So, as it stands, Facebook News is ready to go global within the next six months to a year.

Facebook pays news publishers for displaying their content in the US, and it plans to do the same across the world. According to Campbell Brown, Facebook's vice-president of global news partnerships, Facebook News will accommodate the needs of each country, stating:

Consumer habits and news inventory vary by country, so we’ll work closely with news partners in each country to tailor the experience and test ways to deliver a valuable experience for people while also honoring publishers’ business models.

Facebook will also face the laws and regulations of each new location. Some countries, like France, have taken action against tech companies' reuse of news snippets. But since France is already a confirmed location for Facebook News, it seems Facebook has reached a deal with the country's lawmakers.

Facebook might be focusing its efforts on expanding its News feature globally, but it states that it will still continue to improve Facebook News in the US as well.

Will Facebook News Succeed Internationally?

In the past, Facebook has been criticized for presenting fake news and false information. We can only hope that this pattern doesn't continue, and that Facebook News can curb falsities from spreading across the globe.

And don't forget, Facebook News doesn't have to be your go-to source for news. Instead, you might want to focus on getting world news from reliable, unbiased sources.
