Do external mic and headphones require Windows' sound or the laptop's audio software to be configured? Do computers have their own software for audio speakers and mic settings? This is A Compaq CQ42 Presario 15TU laptop.

Yes, in the sense that
any
soundcard needs to be configured. Unlike desktops however, laptops only have one set of external mic & loudspeaker sockets, so you don't need to choose between "front and back panel" or make any other configurations of that nature. Whatever the settings for the mic, they will work with the built-in or external mic, and likewise with the speaker.
