What is the purpose of the black border with an 'X' in the upper left hand corner that surrounds the text in the Mail program when using Leopard 10.5.8?

That helps a lot, but also is there anyway to choose NOT to have those borders present? Like a preference somewhere to eliminate the from appearing? Thanks a Lot. Lonewolf

The border will appear around each separate 'element' or 'container' as defined by the CSS/HTML tag.if you have copied and pasted from a web page, or replied to/forwarded a message originally written in HTML you will see the boxes appear while you are composing your message. Their purpose is simply to enable you to easily remove individual sections or objects without affecting the remaining items. To remove one just click on the relevant 'X'And don't panic if you delete one by accident, just hit Command+Z to undo.

By default Mac OS X and/or Apple Mail doesn't have any black borders or X-es.From your explanation my first guess you turned on some Universal Access feature by accidant (maybe via one of the assigned shortkeys). Look into the System Preferences under Universal Access and deactivate everything that you are not using on purpose. One exception is the "Enable access for assistive devices" which is used by some third party software ~ if this is checked leave it that way.
